BEFORE I PULL THE LINCOLN OUT OF THE CLOSET OR HR2510 WHICH NETIHER 1 WAS HOOKED UP WITH AN AMP,I NEED SOM EADVICE AS FAR AS DEAD KEY & WHAT THE RADIO'S SHOULD SWING TO SAFELY RUN A TX STAR HDV 250 OR TX STAR HDV 350, THE LINCOLN HAS THE VARIABLE WATTAGE ON FRONT PANEL, THE HR 2510 DOES NOT BUT I CANT ADJUST THE WATTAGE INTERNALLY,I BELEIVE I HAVE IT DEAD KEYING AROUND 5-6 WATTS IF I RECALL CORRECTLY. ANY THOUGHTS/ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.... PAT I WANT YOUR TAKE ON THIS AS WELL..... THANX IN ADVANCE ..... |

Blackjack,
I would have either radio DK NO more than 2 watts into either amp. They both can take a 2w Dk all day long. The swing shouldn't really matter as much as the Dk. With a 2w DK, you should see like a 100w dk in either amp if memory serves me correct. With 20-30w of swing, you should see full output on either amp. Now PLEASE don't quote me on this as it's been quite some time since I played around with an amp. Hope this helps some.

texas star 350....2x2879-put amp on 'high' & knob(for 'v') fully clockwise, turn radio dead key up til amp shows about 50-80 watts dead key & adjust mic gain up til swing shows about 250 watts on AM, probably a bit less on SSB. if you are a ham, you'll probably see a bit less on 10m. |

THANKS TECH 565 & PAT FOR THE INFO,,, Pat would u say the same goes for tx star 250 hdv as the tx star 350hdv, dial a watt off, adjust dead key till amp shows 50-80 watts or would i look for a bit less dead key on amp from the tx star 250 hdv ?? |

no fully clockwise to the right then pushout
green button so the light is off.this is full
output from amp then adjust deadkey as pat said
usually a 2watt dk is safe

I got ya Dale,i iknow when the green light is off,the variable is off & knob all the way to right, the reason i asked in regard to the 2510 /lincoln with an amp is someone had told me a while ago them radio's are not really meant to be run with an amp being a ham radio of that type,i didnt think that made to much sense since alot of people have run them with amps & most of my radio's dual final or not,i've had no problems running them with 2,3, or 4 pill amps,i normally set the dead key at 1-2 watts max and make sure the radio does not swing meyong 20 watts by adjusting the mic gain & i felt the lincoln should be no different then any other export radio in regards to running an amp so i just wanted to double check before using it, thanx again guys,appreciate it. |

dx250 is 2x2290.....adjust same as dx350, except keep amp carrier at around 35-50 watts & adjust mic gain for about 150-175 swing on AM, probably a bit less on SSB, & even a bit less then that on 10 meters. |

Thanx pat, I got a question for ya & anyone else that has ever experienced this problem, ok with the amp off,my s.w.r. is flat, turn the amp on, say mt tx star 350, and with 1 watt from the radio,and i tryed 3 different radio's. the dead key on the amp is showing like 150 watts & like a 2 or better on the s.w.r., if i hit the dial a watt button on the tx star 350, then the amp will key up at say 70 watts dead key,swing to 200 or say with a 1.1 s.w.r., i tryed 3 different amps, the same thing happens, when i hooked up my 4 pill hurricane camp,it showed al ost 200 watts dead key, obviously there is something wrong. PROCESS OF ELIMINATION, I SWAPPED THE 2 BELDEN JUMPER CABLE'S WITH 2 NEW 1'S, SAME PROBLEM, I HAVE A 3FT JUMPER GOING FROM AMP TO RADIO, 1 SIX FOOT JUMPER GOING FROM AMP TO PALSTAR METER CONTROL BOX WHICH IS ON FLOOR,THATS WHY ITS A 6 FT JUMPER, HOWEVER WHEN I PUT A DUMMY LOAD INTO THE ANTEENA INPUT ON PALSTAR CONTROL BOX,THE SWR IS FLAT, SOOOOO IM GUESSING THE PL-259 ON COAX COMING FROM OUTSIDE HAS TO BE RESOLDERED, MY FRIEND WHO HAS SOLDERED IT FOR ME WHEN I GOT IT SAID SINCE I SWITCH AMPS & RADIO'S OFTEN IT MAY HAVE BROKEN THE CONNECTION INSIDE THE CONNECTOR THATS SOLDERED. BY THE WAY THE COAX WAS CHANGED THIS PAST SEPT, BELDEN RG8X & THE ANTRON 99 SO ITS NOT A QUESTION OF THE CABLE BEING OLD OR ANTENNA, ITS WORKED FINE UP UNITL THIS POINT, HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS WEIRD PROBLEM ? MY FRIEND SAID THE AMP PROBLY SHOWS A HIGH DEAD KEY WATTAGE BECAUSE THE HEAT IS BREAKING DOWN THE CONNECTION AT THAT POINT SO WHEN IM RUNNING STOCK OR SAY 40-50 WATTS THE SWR IS FINE, BUT TURN THE AMP ON AND IT SHOWS A WAY TO HIGH SWR ALONG WITH THE AMP SHOWING TO MUCH DEAD KEY DUE IN PART TO THE CONNECTIONS BREAK POINT IF IN FACT THE CONNECTOR NEEDS TO BE RESOLERED. MY FRIEND IS COMING OVER THE HOUSE LATER ON SO ILL REPOST IF THAT WAS IN FACT THE PROBLEM/THE PL-259 , HOPEFULLY MOST OF U WILL NOT EXPERIENCE THIS PAIN OF A PROBLEM,I SPENT 3 HOURS SWAPPING JUMPER CABLES, RADIO'S& AMPS AND WAS BAFFLED AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE... |

DISREGARD THIS POST, I FOUND THE PROBLEM, EVEN WITH THE VARIABLE KNOB ALL THE WAY TO LEFT ON THE VOYAGE VR9000,IT WAS STILL DEAD KEYING AROUND 3 WATTS,THATS WHY THE TX STAR 350HD WAS DEAD KEYING WAY TO HIGH,AROUND 100WATTS, I ADJUSTED THE TR POWER IN RADIO,BROUGHT IT A BIT LOWER SO WITH THE VARIABLE SHE WILL DROP TO 1 WATT,PROBLEM SOLVED, MY FRIEND RESOLDERED ANOTHER AMPHENOL ON MY COAX & THEN SAID WAIT A MIN, CHECK THE DEAD KEY AGAIN ON THE VOYAGE,I REALIZED SINCE IM USING A NEW METER,THE PALSTAR,WHAT I THOUGHT WAS AROUND 1 WATT WAS A BIT MORE,UNLIKE THE DOSY METERS,THE 1ST LINE ON THE METER IS 5 WATTS,THEN ITS BASICALLY GUESSWORK FROM 1 TO 4 WATTS. |
