Over the last few years I have had many radios. Magnum 257, RCI 2950, President Lincoln, etc. All nice radios. Now I have decided to get "back to basics". I want to get a nice simple system in my car. No 10 meter, no complex systems. Just 40 channel old school CB with SSB. Maybe a simple RM heater. Of course my mind goes right to the 80's kings of the air, the Cobra 148 or the Uniden Grant. To my surprise, I am reading that the 148 is NOT what it use to be. Just more Cheap chinese junk?? Bad SSB, tiny weak resistors, poor voltage regulator if any at all (causes SSB to drift). Can this be true? Is the 148 just a memory of better days gone? If it is true, that what radio would you suggest as a big talking AM/SSB CB rig? Who will be the Cobra 148 of the 21st century? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, audioman

if ya really want a old school radio look into ebay for the old style 148.the new 148 isnt like it used to be.a good modern cb with ssb is the texas ranger freedom 1.and the 966.both can be modded and tune up nicely.galaxy 959 is ok but tend to drift i bit more than the texas ranger line.just my experience

. I got back into the hobby about two years ago after being absent for 10 years, I brought all the new radios and two Cobra 2000 off ebay and test equipment to check out radios. My finding are the new radios are as good or better than the older radios. Better Signal to noise ratios and better alignments out of the box's. I had 2 Cobra 148 GTLs, they would not tune up like an old GTL but would tune up with a nice sound and were very stable. The Galaxy CB would do a little better on output power but the receive has a little more noise in it, most all the exports have improved a great deal. The way to improve your system today is to try different antennas with different radios to get a good match up that gives you good receive and a strong transmit, like a new Cobra 148GTL and a K30 antenna, that setup works great!

Intresting ....

How did you measure the noise ( there are many ways )

I used a Lamkin as a rough signal sorce then a IMR1200 and measured the SN using it.

I bought myself a 148GTL 2 months ago and had it fine tune by copper. The sounds to me is really clear in SSB the little knob is almost right in the middle and i don't need to turn it much to fine tune someone.

the problem with all cobra"s is filtering. My choice would be a galaxy. The texas rangers have a problem running them mobile the grounds on the pcb boards break. tony/n5jva/cef 259
