Hi folks,
I have a RCI 2950DX, how roadworthy is this unit? I would like to install it in my Pathfinder. I do a fair amount of 4X4'ing. How is this unit going to hold up? I have a host of Cobra 25's & 29's, but there's just something about the quality of build that RCI delivers. Any thoughts? |

It's not a bad radio just use common sence when you install it

It's a surface mount board so typically it can withstand a little more jarring around and vibration than the older model 2950's.
There are quieter radios for a mobile setup though.
I personally like the 2950dx for ssb audio, it can't be beat.
An old model Cobra 146GTL is the quietest traditional cb I have ever used mobile.

--I've known a couple of people that had 2950DX radios in their pickups (one went off-roading a lot and the other just mainly around town and the occasional off-road jaunt) and they always held up. In fact, I have read in several places that the SMT type of components (Surface Mount Technology) that the 2950DX has is actually a bit stronger, and will hold up to more abuse than the older style "thru-hole" components. With that said, I have known tons of cb'ers and truckers say they have never had any problems with their 25's or 29's (through-hole) or their 2950DX or 2970DX radios (SMT). SMT has been around for years in commercial radios (Kenwood, ICOM, Vertex, Motorola, etc.) inside of dump trucks, fire trucks and police cars, etc. and also amateur radios like Kenwood, Yaesu and ICOM. and they seem to work just fine. I love my 2950DX (Though it's never been inside of a vehicle). Overall, a good radio for the money with the best frequency coverage around. Great "audio checks" on the ham bands. |

I've got a non dx 2950 that has been in my pick up, several over the road trucks, and most recently a log truck and have had only one broke solder joint that was totally my fault from dropping it in the floor while installing new coax. I've had it for 8 years and thats the only thing. Hope this helps.
