ft101e, has 50 channels on each xtal....times 3, to get you from 26.5-28. not a cb, but really my favorite. i still have it & fire it up on cold winter nights. quite possibly could be considered the first ever 'export cb'. it did everything and went everywhere with 100+ watts back in the 70's thru the early 80's. 700 watts from an fl2100b was easier to acquire, accomplish and sounded better then any 10 tube cb amp. even the sb200 was an easy hookup, and with a PS mod, 2kw was ready to go!
had fun with my d201a, browning mk4a, dak x, even a tram 300 & a couple robyns. the one i should've kept was the tram d201a.
the 1st 23 ch base i ever bought NEW was a sears 23+ssb 12v/110v in 1975, which i still have.....the only 1 of my bases i managed to keep. it was NEVER modded because we couldn't get multiple circuit boards separated to get to the diode to open the clarifier or add a vfo or xtal box to. in the late 80's a friend acquired 1 at a yard sale. we attempted to take it apart and broke the corners of the stack of boards. while it was modifiable, ef johnson did a good job of making it 'un-take-apartable'.
i can name probably 50 bases i've owned over 35 years (probably 250 mobiles), few bases did i ever mod, or have long enough to mod. mobiles were less expensive & easier to get, so we experimented on them with xtal boxes, vfo's & big hammers before hooking them up as a base.
besides my yaesu, i use a factory loaded & fully modified rf limited ar3500 as my cb base, along with my ic706mk2g when it's not in my mobile.....

Still have my Stoner PRO 40, comes with open clarifier, I use it once in awhile has a wistlestop null control to knock out am signals did modify for extra channels but since have returned it back to stock. Also it has a +/- swr meter that sends a voltage out to a termianl strip for controling a auto matcher :-)

I wasn't aware the FT101 E was a vintage 23 or 40 channel cb radio-SURE it was! there was probably more of them on CB then the ham bands all through the 70's & early 80's! i'll bet the same is true today! i've used mine on CB for 33 years & probably keyed it on 10m a dozen times. the guy i bought from in 1976 had it for less then 2 years & got yelled at for tvi every time he keyed it, so he sold it to me. can't really ever remember having a tvi problem with it. was always my favorite cb base!

For a 40-channel base I would have to say the Realistic TRC-458 is my favorite. No mods.
I have owned it for approx. 15-years now and the only thing I have ever had to touch on the radio are the control knobs on the front. I like to test other radios receive against the 458's via a 3-way selector switch and flipping between 2-other radios and the 458 at the same time same antenna. The TRC-458 has so-far out heard all of them, which have included an original version President Washington, GTL-142, Johnson messenger 223, browning 23/s-nine r2700a, ft-101, robyn 505d, and assorted other mobiles.

My first base/mobile was a Johnson Whiteface, 5 channels; 2nd base was a Johnson Blackface, 10 channels - put the Whiteface mobile. For several years, I used 2 Blackfaces & 1 Whiteface as my 23 channel base (reversed the other 2 crystals *__*), with a Hygain antenna switch. (The Whiteface was an AC only unit - it would key about 25 watts - the Blackfaces would only key in the 12-15 watt range - and one of them was 23 channel receive).

My first 23 channel base was a Cobra Cam 88 - and one of my favorites (have had several more). I also like the Cobra Cam 89, 89XLR, 87GTL (btw, I have talked more skip on the 89XLR & the 87GTL, than any other 40 channel radio I have ever owned), the 135XLR, and of course the 2000.

I've had over 25 Johnsons at one time, and the 223 is my favorite. (I have a few left)

(many more I could mention like my NIB Echo)

The only 'classic' I still talk on, is my Browning Eagle Mark III, with Gold D104 mike.

I have owned Radio Shack, Lafayette, Uniden, RCA, and many brands I can't remember. I still love the Cobra 138 XLR and even more with the (PLL) unlocked. Thanks copper that book was worth every cent. I also like the Cobra 29GTL, even though it is AM only, for its built in SWR meter. I own a Cobra XRS 979 radar detector, saved me thousands
