Can anyone explain to me how spread spectrum mode works. I mean I understand what frequency hopping or direct sequencing does in jumping about the predefined frequency spectrum but how are the respective algorithms implemented at both the transmitting and receiving end, in other words, how do the aforementioned sync up and 'know' what technique to employ?

In the case of SINCGARS the timing and freq hop information are set ahead of time with an AN/CYZ-10 ANCD (Automated Net Control Device) which in turn receives its time information from a fancy handheld GPS known as a PLGR (Personal Lightweight GPS Receiver) so that all radios on the net are sychronized to the same source.

The rest is PFM.
