I turned on my 99v the other day. It should have been on CB ch19. There was no noise from the radio. The frequency counter was counting down.

It got all the way down to 19.xxx, stayed there a for a few minutes then counted all the way back up to 27.185.

It actully counted down then back up!

Thoughts?

Was the radio in a car? If it was perhaps it was in the heat too long. Extreme heat and cold does have some effect on these newer radios. I always wait for the car to cool down in the summer and warm up in the winter. My radio sets on my dash. Only place I could find to mount mine.

Ya it was in the Jeep in the heat. I do leave the windows rolled down. It's hanging from the roof so not in direct sunlight but it does get hot in there at times.

It was at least 100F that day.

It acted up again 2 days ago in the cold. Took about 20 minutes for it to straighten out. When it's doin this switching channels or bands won't do anything.

It started out @ 16.000 mhz, counted up to 26.045 and stayed there a few minutes. Then jumped to 27.185 where it should have been.

Has been fine ever since.

LOL......Nice!

Chris142, These newer radio's for the most part have a cpu that control's a lot. It is really touchy when it come's to the heat and cold. Some information is in the owner's manual about operating temp's. Keep them out of too hot temp's and for the cold weather leave your radio shut off for about twenty minute's so the heat in your vehicle can get the radio to a good operating temp. This goes for scanner's as well.I hope this will help. I have had the same problem with mine and this work's for me.

I understand how temp will change electronics. But I've had this radio for atleast 10 years, in all sorts of temps and it just started acting up reciently.

Today I pulled it out of the jeep and with some electronic cleaner in a spray can I cleaned all the contacts behind the knobs then unplugged all the plugs, sprayed those and reinstalled them.

While I had the knobs off I used soap and a tooth brush to clean the grunge out of the grooves in the knobs.

Atleast now it looks brand new! I'll have to wait and see if it acts up again.

My "commute" is only 12 minutes long so about the time I'm pulling into my driveway is when it starts working normally.

I have a Voyage VR9000 and it does the same thing sometimes it stays on freq.26.045 for hours on end. If anyone knows the fix for this it would be very helpful.

Hey I was searchin this forum and I found a guy with the same problem.

Heres what his fix was.

"Locate the 10.240mhz crystal labeled X1 on the main pc board.
It's the only crystal completely surrounded in wax and is stamped 10.240 on the side.
Once you find X1 you'll need to located both leads of the crystal on the solder side of the board.
Then unsolder the two leads and make sure the leads stick up far enough above the pads.
Then resolder the leads and test again.
If that doesn't work try replacing the crystal with a new Galaxy DX replacement 10.240mhz crystal, not a generic copy."

You can also try and diagnose it this way; it could help you find the problem. Use a plastic screw driver or a plastic pen and gently push down on the PLL, then wiggle the reference crystal, VCO oscillator cans, L17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 while looking at your frequency counter. Some crystals when installed in circuit boards have a tiny strip of metal on the circuit board where the case of the crystal needs to be grounded with solder. Use a small piece of wire and touch the top of the crystal then to the radio case ground to see if it corrects the problem. There could also be cold solder joints where the PLL and other components like oscillator cans are soldered to the circuit board. This is all speculation providing that the PLL and the surrounding components are receiving the correct voltage. Also inspect your band selector switch for cold solder / connection problems. I had similar problems as you stated in your post with a Connex 4800 and used this method to find and correct the problem with a bad solder joint leg on the VCO Oscillator can.

Best Regards.

Thanks guys. I gave up and took it to a shop. They had it 2 weeks. Never found the problem but charged me for their time. Took it to shop #2. They fixed it for a few hrs then it went back to acting up.

A friend and I have spent a few nights pushing and wiggling things and we cant find the problem.

I give up. :-( It went back into the closet.
