I have used a Galaxy 99 for many years. With this radio I can set the squelch so that theres no noise unless somebody talks. They do not need much of a signal to break the squelch.
If nobody is talking the radio is quiet.
Unfortunatly the 99 died.
So being on a budget I replaced it with a Uniden PC78. This radio picks up every powerline I drive under, traffic lights etc.
It's very annoying. So annoying that I pulled the 78 out and into the closet it went.
Many people rav about the older Uniden Grant XL. So I found one (used of course) and threw that into the Jeep.
The Grant picks up the same noises as the 78. Every time I drive under a power line or any other electronic thing it breaks the squelch and buzzes.
This annoys the $$%#% out of me! Constantly hearing snap, crackle and pop.Adjusting the RF gain doesn't help. This just blocks out weak signals and leaves the snap, crackle and pop.
My question is. Are the 10M radios built that much better than a CB where outside interference is concerned? Or does Galaxy use a better filter in the radio?
Are there any other radios ya'll can recomend that will work like my old 99 did? |

Why not try a Galaxy CB radio?
Cannot say they will be as quiet as your Galaxy 99 but probably an improvement.
I have found Galaxy CB radios to be the best all around mobile radios that I have used for transmit and receive in my Ford F150 truck. |

I'm currantly running a Galaxy 959. It's recieve is very good, almost as good as the 99. It works very well when it works.
The problem is that I use the radios in my daily driven Jeep Wrangler. The bouncy Jeep absolutly destroys the Galaxy boards.
I'm constantly having to work on them and when I can't find the problem I have to drive 120 miles round trip to a decient CB guy.
I like having extra channels, a frequency counter and SSB. Although no counter on my Grant. I was hoping to use the Grant since they are well built but I just can't handle the static.
Maybe I should get 3-4 959's, do the x-tra channel mod and just swap them out as they break? |

Try shock mounting the radio by using a rubber cushion between the mount and the Jeeps body. A coupel of pieces of mouse mat may help, although in the past, I have used a single layer of a close cell foam camp mattress.
either way use bolts and lock nuts and do not make them 100% tight, leave a little play in them. It may help.

I was actully working on a rubber mount when you posted that. We have rubber bumpers at work. The type that have a metal sleeve in the middle. I'm playing with the sleeve.........Shortning it a little at a time to get the bounce down. When I first used the rubbers the radio was bouncing all over the place!
So far I have removed .250 from the sleeve to snug it up w/o making it a hard mount. |
