Hello! I'm a new ham operator! Before I'm able to buy a updated transceiver for the ham bands, is there a way I can install a Ranger 2995DX with a interface for use with PSK31 and my computer? I plain on buying a Kenwood or Yaesu later. The newer ham transceivers are set up for digital use. The 10 to 12 meter Rangers are not! Is there a way to rig a interface with my Ranger 2995DX. Thanks!

The 2995DX won't do PSK31. Sorry.

Tech 833, I believe that MFJ has a product that will let you link psk 31 through the mic plug. Correct me if I am wrong.

@ 833 < curious as to why not?

The radio does USB.

I don't have one myself But according to the specs
the radio does 28.00-29.6999
& 24.890-24.990.

has tuning steps of 1mhz,100khz,10khz,1khz,& 100hz

PSK is done on upper side band and for 10 meters is around 28.120
on 12 meters is 24.920

For interfacing into the computer for receive, could be as simple as a cord direct from the radio's speaker out to the sound card. If isolation is needed a small matching transformer is available at Radio Shack.

Would need something like a Rig blaster Nomic with the cord rewired to match the radio to handle keying and transmit audio.

Since PSK has a high duty cycle the TX audio driving the radio would need to be limited to only allow about 1/3 of the radio's TX power.

Since the radio is capable of 150 watts, TX audio would need to be restricted using the Sound cards slider controls along with the control on the Nomic to allow no more than 50 watts out to preserve the finals.

Most hams don't use more than 35 watts on their 100w rigs and talk for 1000's of miles.

If the radio can be tuned to the 2 frequencies mentioned, Fine tuning of the signal would be accomplished in the audio pass band in the PSK programs waterfall display.

It may not be an Idea setup but would allow someone to get on the air.

Of course if they found out what he was using, It might bring a lot of comments about using a glorified export C.B. etc.

One last and important thing that Would put the KERBASH on the whole thing is

How good is the IMD performance of the transmitter??

PS.
28.125 would be right in the middle of the PSK frequency range on 10m (28.120-28.130)

Thanks! Funtimebob and Tech 833. I'm all ready using it on 10 meters upper side of 28.120. The soft ware I'm using on my computer is Digipan. I'm manually keying my D-104 against the speaker. And trying to type at the same time. What a mess! I'm not a good typer! And trying to key my mic and type at the same time is a pain. I have made five contacts with PSK31 with Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Tucson, Az. And Naples, Florida. This has become too much work! Lol! I just may wait! Until income tax time for my new Yeasu 1000 or 2000 transceiver. I will check out MFJ! And yes Funtimebob! I'm not bragging about my glorified CB on the Ham bands. The Ranger 2995DX is a strong talker. You would think that Ranger with the 10 meter and 12 meter bands would upgrade there Ranger's for use with all the digital bands of operation. The PSK31, QPS31, ECT! All Ranger has to do is install a plug socket for the Computer interface. The Sound card in a computer is what performs all the work. Thanks all! 73's

I thought the frequency stability would be an issue. Apparently, I was incorrect.

From my experience with a 2995DX, the frequency tended to wander dozens of cycles over a short period of time unless the radio has been on and tempurature stabilized for a while.

If it works for you, then that's awesome. Go for it!

Grab your self a rig blaster Nomic
The standard mic wiring for the 2995 is

1. Ground Shield
2. Audio Yellow
3. Transmit Red
4. Receive Black
5. CH. Up White
6. CH. Down Blue

The Rig blaster comes with an 8 pin cable which can be replaced the plud with a 6 pin plug to fit your radio. the manual shows examples of the jumper pin settings which would make it easy to adapt to your ranger.
