I just traded a lot of radios for this, I was told it was nearly the same as a Uniden Washington, well part of the trade was my Uniden Washington, I clipped nothing, removed nothing, just turned the Modulation all the way up, and replaced two 10k resistors to 2.2k and that radio keyed around 3 and swung to 20! This Cobra 2000 keys 3 and swings to 15, best I can get, the limiters were cut, it was worse, it did key 3 and swung to 18, BUT VERY DISTORTED!!! So I put everything back the way it was. I can only get about 80% Modulation too! HELP!!! I tried some power mods to this radio, but I think I have a bad regulator somewhere, when I key the radio, they lights dim, when I talk they get really really bright!!!! WHATS UP WITH THAT, it's usually the opposite in most radios!!!!

Does anyone know what to do??? And does anyone have the FULL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE???? I know something is out of line, it kesy 3-15 on CH1, 2.5-10 on 40!!! HELP!!! REGULATOR??? ALIGNMENT??? WHATS UP WITH THIS??? HELP HELP HELP :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(!!!!!! I HAVE A PERFECT MATCH ON MY ANTENNA AND JUMPERS!!! MY 2990 and MELAKA DO GREAT!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!

Does sound like alignment to me. But you definetly have a voltage reg not doing something somewhere. By the way, From my experience with the 2000. 80% is the best you'll get. I never achieved more until I finally installed a modulation kit in it. I found that the best way to run any radio is to modulation drive it. I don't know much about radios but a friend told me that you definetly have voltage bleeding back if your lights are getting brighter! short somewhere in a reg. He said to be careful or you could blow a final or the board. I'm not sure if this helps any. But I try.

I tried different mikes and I got the alignment stuff, but it didn't help more than one more watt... I think you're right though, I got a bad voltage regulator somewhere, and I will try to install a modulation kit as soon as I find this regulator, thanks though!!! :) And I got an extra stock final here ... just in case it blows!

S Cpu try to put dc on the cobra 2000 throw the switch in back to dc try to talk on it and see if you have the same thing. If not then you have isolated the problem to the power supply

Depending on the age of the 2000 , the pre-1990 models would do about 12-14 watts max. The "three" cans along the left side near the 16 pin mixer IC control the power balance across the frequency spread. Sounds like you are almost there , I would look for 13 watts swing from channel 1 through 40.

No it is not normal. The Voltage Regulator Circuit in the 2000 should stay at 13.8 volts and most likely the zener or some component on the small regulator board is bad. Use an external power supply and let me know if they still go dim.

Voltage reg on this radio supplies 8v. Have a look at the cobra 2000 npc mod in the open forum I posted, its all there. 15V supply from external power supply with heavy duty lead really gee's this radio up, seen 28w pep with npc - linear mod etc nb set dynamike around 2 oclock for best audio. It runs well at 15v, but dont push it further, modulation will retard and you will burn lamps quick.

My apologies to 307 above on 8v comment .Im referring to pcb regulator not power supply. A power supply voltage increase there will involve a zener diode change to voltage desired rating. I use a external 20a supply @15v as i have it connected to other radio's too, so it's there to use. 8amp or above external power supply rating recommended or fit a 14.5v zener to internal supply regulator.

I'm like 307 I bet it needs a good alignment bet ther's been more screw drivers in it than are in my tool box now. When working good they get about 18 watts pep top. Never did a npc mod on a 2000 But bet it would do at least 25.
