I just purchased this Cobra 89 XLR. Does anyone know anything about this kind of base radio? I am new at this and will appreciate all the advise I can get.

I fellow cb'r said to take the radio to a good shop and have a set of galazy finals put it in, it seems all of a sudden I am getting all this advice and am not sure if it is the right thing. Also, I had a connex board that is echo and reverb put in a mobil, will it work in the xlr 89?
and anyother toys that will work in it.

"Real components" meaning, of course that you can Actually See Them. The last mod I did on a radio with SMD consisted of heating up the iron, touching it to the offending SMD and giving it a quick flick of the wrist, which of course catapulted it into oblivion. Good thing I wasn't trying to replace something :-) The one before that was another removal job, and as I recall, the SMD disappeared into the leftover solder blob on the end of my iron...oh well.

If you want a better unit, invest in a model that is designed to run in the manner you wish. Putting those finals in that unit would be like putting a nitrous oxide system in a Pacer. You might get one or two smoking runs but it WILL blowup shortly thereafter. Take a look around this website, there are plenty of deals to be had.

I wasnt really looking for a better unit, I think its like Steve 181 said, it is a desireable unit, and think it will do me just fine, but like I said, I had all this advice and didnt want anything to happen to my radio if I could help it, but he didnt answer my other question, that is if the connex board will work in my XLR89.

Tim,

These nice techs are telling you the right thing about your Cobra base.If you want echo and roger beeps, get you one of the turbo echo mikes that does it all from Copper..That Cobra is a nice radio,i love my old Cobra 148gtl.If you add anything to your 89 make sure you have the switches and knobs added to the back of the radio. This way you want mess up the front of this nice radio.

Best of luck!

T-Man
