HELLO, PLEASE ANSWER THIS, ON SSB IF I WANTED TO USE 25 WATTS SSB, WHERE WOULD I PUT THE MIKE GAIN KNOB, IT IS MARKED 1 THRU 10, ALSO IF I ONLY WANTED TO USE 5WATTS 15 WATTS PEP, HOW DO I SET THIS, IS EACH NUMBER A WATT, WHICH WOULD BE 3 WATTS PEP SSB, I HAVE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO CONTROL MY OUTPUT WATTS PEP ON SSB, AND USE THEM.

THANK YOU TED

Your radio has a variable power knob. With the knob fully clockwise your radio should put out 35w. In this position look at the power output meter on the radio. Make note of where the needle goes to when you modulate. Now while saying "aaauuu" turn your mike gain back until the needle just starts to drop. That's where you leave the mike gain. Then just break it down in fractions in your head as you turn the variable power down while watching the power meter. This is about all you can do without external meters.
Now...if your variable power doesn't turn the ssb power down, that means someone has hacked your ALC limiter out of the radio and all of the above is useless (likely as well as your SSB).

I don't think the variable power knob has any effect on SSB power in the 2517. I know it doesn't with the Galaxy Saturns. It does on the Ranger versions, like the 2950-2990 and others.

PLEASE KEEP THE COMENTS COMING, I ALSO BELIEVE THE THE RF CONTROL IS ONLY FOR THE AM POWER, I WILL PUT A METER ON IT, AT TIMES I ONLY WANT 15 WATTS PEP COMING OUT, I AM USEING A D104, SO I HAVE FOUND IT TO SHOW 15 WATTS PEP OUT, ON A LOW NUMBER 2 ON THE MIKE GAIN KNOW, THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, I WILL TRY THE METER TED

Karatebutcher: your right, on the galaxy boards, the RF control is for AM only. You can control SSB power with the mike gain. Like Taz said, the only accurate way to check your output is with an external meter. Even a slight variance in SWR or impedance will effect the meter on the radio, much moreso than an external meter. scrapiron

if it is the 2517 with the 6900 board(not sure but for some reason feel there was an earlier version that did not use the 6900 board), then the power control -is- active in ssb. even with the alc cut it should reduce ssb output since the voltage at the finals is being reduced. -but- this also depends on how the internal high/low power spread was previously set(the low setting will interact with am low power).

Hey KARATEBUTCHER,check the caps lock on your comp.it looks like you're yelling at us.Speak at a normal level and say "awwwwwwwwwwww" into the mike instead of whistling, unless your normal voice level has the same pitch and intensity. You can actually screw up your radio by whistling repeatedly,I believe that's what happened to my Eagle 2000.

Bigbob, how is this. I am so use to useing all caps, even in the navy i did it that way some times, ok with the whistling, I only did it once to test the output pep, it goes up higher of coarse when you whistle, right to 15pep, talking it is much below, but now after taking your advise i feel safer using it that way.

I have been on the radio for 27 years and love
and i am still learning.
If you have any other advise for me on the radio please e mail me ok, we can compair notes on our radios. thanks guys

hey guys be careful using the mic gain as a way to reduce output on ssb. all modulations forms have a percent of mod(excluding cw). if you use the mic gain to control ssb power, and you go down too low, you will have less than 100% mod in ssb mode. you can see this by firing 2 tones of equal level but different freqs(and harmonically unrelated) into the mic input while adjusting the mic gain and observing on a scope. i brought this up for you 'modulation monsters'.
