Can I swap out the two pills in the radios internal amplifier to get more power or should I just leave it alone and but an external amp.

If you look inside most amplifiers that use THE larger transistor (2SC2879) you'll find that the output transformer is longer, and that other component values are different. A larger output transformer won't fit the circuit board, and pushing more power through the 3/4-inch long transformer already on it causes overheating, often melting the solder that holds the capacitor across the input side. Rather than start another "Don't spend money for less than DOUBLE the power you had" discussion, my two-cents' worth is that you'll get a little (20% to 30%) more on your wattmeter, but NOT enough more for anyone on the other end to tell the difference. Besides, soldering that capacitor back in from time to time will get tedious after a while.
Ranger installed parts that are big enough for the 2SC2290 transistors, but did not include any EXTRA 'hidden' capability for more power. That would have cost them more on the assembly line, for NO benefit to THEM in selling more radios.
If you just want to see 'more' on the wattmeter like, for bragging rights then go for it, but additional transmit range won't be the result. You'll get more range per buck spent with an external amplifier. An eight-transistor is about right for this drive level.
