Hey Guys,
I just picked up a 138XLR with a RedCo Digiscan wich is wired up for the D858 Chip in XLR. I was wondering if any techs or forum members know how to wire this gismo up to a MB8719 chip. Say to a 142GTL or a 148GTL..... I'm been searchin for a RedCo Digiscan for a while and finally scored one. Any input on this would be much appreciated.....Thanks all.....73's

Is it the older one in the metal case? Or the later one in the (smaller) plastic cabinet?. Somewhere around here is the setup info for one or the other version, probably the old one. I'll check back in a day or two.
BTW, the PLL chip INSIDE the radio is completely disabled when the Digiscan is running the radio. A MC145106 chip (just like nearly every Galaxy/Connex has) is in the Digiscan, taking the place of the one in the radio. Setup for 148 and 142 are slightly different, depending on which crystal 11.112 or 11.325 is in the radio. The jumpers (dip switches?) have to match the crystal.

Found the folder for the old version (metal case). The circuit board and setup in the new version is ALL different. Still looking for that.

Whups, took a while to get back to this one. Snapperhead tapped me on the shoulder via e-mail, and I'll summarize here, since other folks are reading this stuff, too.
From his description of a box with 14 wires in a flat cable, this is a gadget we saw around here that bore the name "Digi-TUNE", not "-Scan". It may say "Digi-SCAN" on the front, but the one I know by that name is different. The version with two small coaxes, a hot and a ground wire is the "Redco Digi-Scan UFO" or "Elite" that can be set up internally for most CB radios with a PLL of any kind. The "UFO" box has its own MC145106 chip, the same one millions of Galaxy/Connex/Superstar radios still use. This one completely bypasses the whole PLL chip built into the radio, and completely disables the internal channel switch. Anyway, the flat-cable version HAS TO MATCH the radio. The ones I've seen had no jumpers or setup switches at all. The trick is, telling what kind of radio/PLL chip it was already set up for?

Well, boy do I feel clever. If I had refreshed my memory from his original post, I would have seen immediately that this gadget is set up for the uPD858 chip in the radio he mentioned. Oops. That is the ONLY chip type this thing will fit. Sorry. The Redco Digiscan UFO (metal case) or Elite version (plastic case) is what you are really looking for.

It tells you that you have the one with just four wires. The PLL chip is NOW inside the Digi-Scan. Don't know why they removed the MB8734 from the 2000, but it's no longer needed. At all.

I have a Redco Digi-Scan UFO.Been in the closet for a while.I dont have a need for it.I have a manual also but the manual is for a Digi-Scan DS-400.The only difference i can tell is the programing dip switches are mounted on a seperate board vertically in the UFO and are mounted directed onto the main board on the DS-400.Look's as if they wire they same.Cant say if it work's or not.I applied 12vdc to it an it came on.It'll scan and step up but will not scan or step down.If anyone is interested in it i would trade it for a Uniden HR2510 Service Manual.

I have all of the "redco" RDS-1,RDS-02,RDS-5,RDS-6 and UFO manuals. I also have the DS-400 info but you can find that online. I also have most of the commscan-200 info. Some of these units are PLL control units[they control your radio's PLL ie 858& the others] others are digital VFO'S and replace your radio's PLL. I can show you how to swich from your CH knob to the PLL control units and back with the pa-cb SW. I know I am late with this info but I have not used a radio in 15 yrs and cooper was not online back then. I would be happy to help with this info, contact me and we will talk [copper talk that is]

Hello Ibacbfreq, I just left a post on a different thread on Modifications on this subject. I guess I should of read my old post way back when......LOL...Anyways, I have a Redco UFO. It has a plastic case and is rather larger than my older RDS-1 with metal case and 14wire rainbow ribbon out of the back.....This one I bought wired into a old radio wich was not working, but UFO works. It was wired into a PLL02A radio. It has two wires and two small coaxes coming out of UFO......I know where the red and black go, but the two small coaxes I need some answers on.....I have a old style 148gtl I want to wire it up to. Does this UFO I have, replace the MB8719 chip? Can this UFO work with my 148gtl......Any info would help greatly.......Thanks, 73's

Snapperhead: Yes the UFO makes the 8719 unnessasary[sp?] I have the manual for the UFO but as stated the DS-400 is almost the same and the install-program info is online. If you want instant info try a search for DS-400 or I can photocopy the UFO info for you but I am slow. I can not remember if the program codes are the same for both units but I can give you the codes in an email the hookup's are the same if I remember corectly. feel free to email me 73'S, Don

Allen: It bypasses the PLL circuit on the 148 and most other PLL radios, The UFO or 400 are the ones you are hunting, if you can find one. The UFO/400 tunes the radio in steps of 5 KHzs. Acts much the same as a VFO on an amateur transceiver, just that it's limited to the tuning range of the radio.
I have an RDS-1 on a Cobra 138XLR and it tunes in steps of 10 KHzs. 200 channels and wires direct to the uPD-858 program pins and the radio's channel selector is no longer used, The Redco does the tuning.
