I just purchased a LIKE NEW RCI 2980 from Copper.

I guess UPS did another number, the radio was on 24mhz and not keying up. I took the bottom off to look at the solder side of the board, and there was a MASSIVE 2 inch crack on the board. I've bridged ALL of the broken paths I could see. Everything is fine now, almost. Only band D CB band is having problems. Key up is ok, but channel 18 shows up as 27.105, when I press on the board it changes to 27.175 like it should. I don't see anymore cracks, I temporarily used a lump of tape to keep pressure on the board so I use the radio.

Is there anywhere specific I should be looking for a crack or broken solder joint? I don't want to send the radio back, I've been wanting one too bad. Is there any fixes? Or just keep the lump of tape in there and hope it keeps working?

Sintronic CPU,

WHY OH WHY! Did you not Call Customer Service or Send Radio back as soon as you noticed a broken board.

All radios are checked out before sending them out to make sure thay are in working condition.

I realize you may have wanted one for a long time but with the fixes you mentioned you made I forsee a Long future of problems.

If you would of called to send it back I am sure they would of gladly fixed it and returned it to you. As it would have been covered under shipping Insurance.

Now that you have bridged all of the broken paths you could see and still have problems you need to call Customer Service before you go any further.

IF YOU EVER RECEIVE ANY ITEM FROM ANYONE IN DAMAGED CONDITION CALL THEM FIRST BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO THAT ITEM!

Well I don't have money to ship it back right now. And I've delt with this before. I have one more bridge somewhere to find (that works the 10 KC switch and certain channels) and everything will be ok. Had the same problem with a Galaxy 88 and it's lasted 5 years now (hence my fancy soldering work).

I also had a Melaka with the same problem, just like on the prescriber preveiw section. This was the same crack.

Well either way, I have plenty of solder and wire, but can't come up with another $20 for shipping for awhile, all of my incoming money for the next 3 months is already spent basically. Had to pay 2 school tuitions and all. Unless I don't pay my phone bill, but I can't do that.

I have one more suggestion, I know this is out there, but in 3 or 4 months I have some money coming in, can Copper get me a new EPT360014B Board? Another online supplier sells them for $99, but can you get me one cheaper? I know this all sounds stupid, but you won't take a radio back after a couple months and I can't come up with a measly $20 for a while. I've already paid all my bills this month, and got all the groceries and I only got $7 and 63 cents in my pocket. But I've got a court settlement coming in 3 months and I'm owed $5000, so I can fix the radio completely later.

It's working 100% with pressure on the board now. I been talking on it for 4 hours, not a problem one. Is there anyway I can obtain a board through Copper? My money situation is too stupid to send it back right now. :( I got this radio when I did because my settlement is paying for it, I already won the civil case. I just can't afford anything else till I have the settlement money here, no more credit, Cause I can't pay my bill if I charged $20 :( Help!

I posted a message in the customer service thread. I'm in a goofy situation right now. If I had the money it woulda been dropped off to UPS for return today.

Actually I don't mind the work though. I love this type of thing. I guess I'm like 307. I fix everyone's radios around here for free all the time just to do the work. I have really wanted one of these for a while, but I actually am welcoming the challenges of it. That's 50% of he fun in radio. 50% Talking and playing, 50% hands on technical fun too!

I suggested if maybe 307 had a radio with the same board in it but it is in horrible cosmetic condition maybe I could get the board off him before he gets rid of the radio. Like a Galaxy DX11 or Saturn or a Voyage VR9000 with a blown freq counter and whole face is almost destroyed, but the board is good. The radio itself isn't worth all the fixing if it's like that, but that board can give my radio a new life to match it's perfect case! LOL:) As long as it's a EPT360014B 6 banded version with SSB and roger beep it will work, heck even a DX77 board would.

If they got anything like that for free or cheap, it shouldn't cost more than $7.63 for shipping a 1 pound board, should it? USPS should only be $3.95 for stuff like that.

Well I might be crazy, but this has been fun so far :):):)! A new day, a new challenge! I should be disappointed and upset, but I'm just silly!

I have a 2980 and a KLV-1000. The radio seems to be overdriving the amp. Would it hurt the amp to lower the driver knob or should I have the radio detuned as it will not key up any lower than 3 watts.

3 watts is ok for it. keep it at 3 or lower it to 2 watts if possible.
