You might ask 307, I'd suspect the voltage regulator.

307,

Let me start by saying thank you for your help. I received the part in the mail today. I can't seem to find its match on the units pcb. Most of the ics have 8 leads, the one you sent has 7. Is it the ic at location "IC3" ? It looks simular but is much smaller in size. The pcb is identified with PC-833AF if that helps.

Thanks again,

Ben

307,

I think the unit has a NEC PC1242H audio IC chip. Or at least that is the numbers on the chip that seems to gets very hot. It has a green Triac or transistor to the right of it. Both mount to the chassis for cooling needs.

I hope this helps..

307,

It has a NEC upc1242H, you sent a NEC C1182H3. I think the upc1242 is actually a newer replacement for the old NEC c1182H3 chips. So far thats what I've been told by Cobra...

Is there away to use the c1182H3?

The UPC 1242 WILL install in place of the 1182, by grounding TWO pins in place of the single ground pin on the original 1182. You just have to ground the RIGHT two pins.

Sounds like it's time to check the PLL unlock detector and the regulated power supply. Do you have a voltmeter? A 'scope? If not, I think you may have gotten as far as you can with this one. It sure sounds like a 'screwdrivered off the air' job to me. The cure for that is a full alignment. Even if they put it to sleep by turning ONLY ONE slug too far, the rest probably got twisted in an effort to revive it. You might take a bright light and magnifier to look at all the little gray tuning slugs. If you see any cracks in the tops of any slugs, it's a bad sign, but would confirm my 'screwdriver' theory.

I have located a local fella here who seems to know his stuff (he used to work for cobra's tech department - so he claims). This will be a good test for him I guess. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

It's just one of those things that just bugs the heck out of ya for some unknown reason.

However, it'll make a great conversation pc as a door stop for the radio room...

Nothin but smiles and grins.....73's

Ben
