I picked up a Cherokee 1000 at a yard sale ($5.00). It has a few probs such as no meter lights, but the biggest problem seems to be the receive audio is sort of garbled or maybe warbles a bit. The RF gain pot isn't workig either and it may be overloading the receive end. Sorry I'm not being more specific but it's difficult to explain without hearing it. Seems the same on AM and SSB. It seems to transmit and has modulation but I have not gotten an on air check of it's transmit. One thing at a time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It has been modified for 11 M and has a "dial a watt" installed and they appear to work correctly. Many thanks for this forum. Sandbagger #106

Common problem with the 1000. There are two germanium diodes that limit the front end AGC by acting as a voltage divider at the same time acting as a spike limiter. When one shorts , the RX sounds garbled because the AGC is cranked. The RF gain is affiliated with this problem as well.

Thanks 307. Is the solution then to replace the shorted diode(s), and if so are they on the main board. Will this rectify the rf gain pot so it will work again or am I missing somthing. Sounds too easy. Thanks for your time 73 Sb106

Ya , I have no prints on it though , They are on the main board but off the top of my head I don't know the locations. You will have to take it to some CB Shop that is well known.

OK thanks, one last question on the 1000, do you happen to know the voltage values of the small panel lights? They are burnt out and I thought I would replace them as long as the radio is apart. Thanks again for the response and info. SB106

Thanks for the link Sonoma, Yea, I took a voltage reading of the bulbs, 13.8 nominal. I've been checking diodes as 307 suggested but still can't find a shorted one. Anyone know? I downloaded info from that site and will look at it and see what I can find out. Thanks again to all. SB 106

i have a cherokee 1000 that HAD been modified for all the frequencies it can hold ( key word is HAD )...the recieve audio was lousy, and the rf gain knob cut out at about the 12 noon mark ( straight up )....so...I UNMODIFIED it to being just a simple 40 channel rig... the audio cleared up, but still re - aligned the RECIEVE by the info I had...but the rf gain knob is still the same way... good luck on your situation... btw it talks great on AM & SSB but I dont like the RF GAIN knob doing like it does....TECH 307; I need your help if you can provide it...I need to know ALL of the RV identification, I know rv 4 is am power, and rv 14 is ssb power, what about all the others for the squelch, mod,. meter readings on recieve & transmit, etc....can you help ? this is needed for a CHEROKEE 1000...thanks in advance...kd4amg

307: Seems like your the tech. that can repair my Cherokee CBS-1000, I am the fourth owner of the rig,I have the same problems as the other gent: garbled receive audio and RF gain not operative, seems the party that sold the radio new that did the conversion in Oklahoma City did the damage when it was tuned up, also need to know if there is a 10 Kc jump and can the clarifier be broadened. My E-mail Addy is 100% on my bio, please E-mail me leting me know where to send it, how well to pack it, and a ruff idea what the charges are to repair it. Has been so long that I haven't used it, I've forgotten how the 10 bands work Thank you, Yankee
