i'm still messing with this 2970dx. the amp is not working. the relay is clicking but the radio is only putting out what it can do by it's self-about 4.5 watts. about 20 on ssb. what are the most common causes of this? any info greatly appreciated. |

Opening up the radio and operating it with the shiny metal shield cover still in place is the starting point. I'm not sure I should recommend that. This radio is pretty crowded inside. Too many opportunities to pinch a wire while putting the covers back on. Pull out the small brown 2pin socket from the main board next to the 'mirror' board (bias test jumper)in front of the driver transistor. This will permit seeing what just the RADIO alone is putting out. If it is only feeding a fraction of a watt to the linear, you would see four or five watts coming out, more or less. With this plug loose, you will no longer hear the relay "click" when you key and unkey. If the radio delivers about 16 watts peak, your problem is in the amplifier, not the radio. This calls for an o-scope to follow the power through the amplifier, and see where it is stopping (nearly) dead.
If the radio barefoot shows only a fraction of a watt, the amplifier is probably not damaged, yet. Leaving the amplifier unplugged will simplify tracing the breakdown at the radio end of the chain.
