Does anyone have a working knowledge of these amps??
I did a search on the forum for Elkin and saw very little posts except a member wanting to buy them up. I have heard that they are good and hard to find,.....???? I was able to locate one, it's a 6 tuber.
What is the scoop on them.......

I had a standing offer for years. I would repair one if the owner brought a schematic diagram with it. Never happened.
The design is pretty unique. Instead of the usual grounded-grid arrangement, the cathodes are grounded, and the grids receive the drive power. This is trickier to do, especially with more than one tube. Some of them I saw were neutralized, other models used a swamping resistor in the grid circuit to make the thing stable. Grounding the cathode means the power supply needs another section, to feed bias to the tube grids. To get the relatively small 12DQ6 black-and-white TV Sweep Tubes to survive, the grids were biased around cutoff. This reduced the carrier power to a safe value, resulting in the famously large forward swing, like a Black Cat JB tube amp. This is the same trick Black Cat used to achieve large swing on their "Jewel Box" designs.
Whoever it was that designed these was a really sharp cookie, but he kept the technical cards close to his vest, and never let loose of a diagram ever, that I know. If someone were to find one, I sure would be interested.
I did offer to reverse-engineer a diagram for a couple of customers, but the hourly rate for that project would cost enough to just start over and buy a new amplifier. Never got a taker on that proposition, either.

Know these amps very well.
Also knew the guy's that built them at E.S.C.
I have thought about doing the diagrams on these myself. But had no need. The bad thing about them that there was hardly two identicle. Unless they were built in the same month. Ray constantly changed the circuit a little along the way.
They worst thing about then are the old can style capacitors. Sometimes would sound like a gun going off. All of them I rebuild are updated to modern looking board that holds the 4 new caps and diodes and restistors.
People used to come in the shop with the old 12 tupes and really thought they had a power house.
But was surprised to only see 550 watts lol.
Good amps in my book.
Now as far as the mobile versions, hard to find parts now. Mostly transformers. The 4 and 8 tube mobiles had a secondary transformer that I have not been able to find anywhere. |

RAY ELKINS IS THE DESIGNER AND BUILDER OF THESES AMP, AND IF YOU RUN A CROSS A 4 OR 6 TUBER BUY IT, IF IT NEEDS ANY THING MUST OF THE TIME WHICH ONLY HAPPEN IF SOMEONE IS TRYING ENDLESSLY TRYING TO STEP ON SOMEONE THEY CAN'T IS A SET OF TUBES AND FOR MOST WORK STIFF'S LIKE ME IT MIGHT SET YOU BACK A GOOD DAY'S PAY, HE LIVES IN ELKIN NC. ray elkins, i think you have his last name confused with where he's from. i've had a couple of these amps and they are dependable but they dont impress me output wise... if you want real power, you have to go with something besides a 12dq6. like 572b or 3-500z or the like. im not trying to flame because in their time they were great amps but for some of the stuff out there today they just dont hold a candle. |
