If I replace Q17 with a 2sc2999 or NTE23 will it give it better recieve with less noise? I have read this Mod for other radios and I am wondering if it will work on the TR396F |

The only "noise" that it will affect is the noise level with the antenna UNHOOKED !!
Some folks think that making the noise level louder with a preamp is useful. If level of noise coming in from the antenna coax is high enough to tickle the S-meter, a preamp (or a hotter transistor) just won't help. It WILL make the noise level higher.
Just unhook the coax, turn off the ANL and NB, and see how much noise you hear with the volume control at a normal setting. THAT is the noise level you will be reducing.
When you reconnect the antenna coax, the noise level should come up noticeably. Making THAT noise level louder won't help you hear anybody who is weaker than the noise level.

Maybe its just the nature of the radio,it seems to recieve ok but I just wish I could get the back ground noise level down like the old Cobra 25LTD that I use to have.Thanks for the info anyways 2600. |

I think you might look at some of the external dsp speakers that are available in the ham world. Or an audio filter. These devices are nice, and might do a good job for your needs. |

I did have one thought: Could the ANL/NB switch have been "hijacked" for some other use, like a noise toy or such? If the blanker isn't working on the radio, you will hear a lot more noise than you should. If the noise blanker is disabled, that's a problem.
If the switch seems to cut down the noise, pick an empty channel, and turn the RF Gain down so the meter still reads only around 2 or so. Turn the blanker back OFF and see how much the receiver meter comes up. The Galaxy/RCI noise blanker works better when it isn't being overwhelmed. The RF Gain will help if the noise level is really high, or all the channels are full of loud skip talkers.

None of the switches have been Hijacked,havent done the channel mod yet,like I said it recieves fine I can hear distant stations as good as anyone else but it just seems to have more back ground noise than any radio I have had.I do use the RF gain to tone it down and that helps alot.I am going to take it and have it aligned this week and leave well enough alone.Thanks for all the help guys but I think it might just be me that needs to get the hang of this radio. |
