Leadfoot,

Standard wiring for your radio should have been:
PIN #1 ~ SHIELD
PIN #2 ~ N/C
PIN #3 ~ TRANSMIT
PIN #4 AUDIO
PIN #5 ~ RECEIVE

What kind of other mics did you try?

i purchased this radio with a realistic powered desk mike, with worked fine for the first year of ownership, then when the squeal started i purchased a realistic hand mike, not powered, my modulation dropped considerably but the squeal was still there, since my turner supersidekick was eating batteries left and right i found a turner +2, mind you ALL the mikes had the same result, i even resoldered the wires hoping to remedy the problem to no avail, another friend suggested maybe the transmit relay was dying, if so is it difficult to replace? can i easily find a replacement?

Leadfoot,
what is your swr on your system?Your last sentence in your first post gives the best clue.as for your ssk eating batteries I would guess the reed switch needs adjusted in the mic itself(staying closed when mic is unkeyed putting a constant drain on battery)I normally change my battery about once a year long before it dies, and it is my most heavly used mic.

Put a 50 load on it and see if it has the squeal
still if you ecer been in this radio check the
wires coming into it by moving them when keyed
up. if all is ok then try this rf filter its
a 1k ristor and a .01 cap put it in the mic
just at the amp board.

I had the same problem back in 1984 when i had my first one. There was a problem with the radio and mine was fixed. I'll look around for the invoice that i was given when i had it fixed. This is a really good radio when working right I had my first one modified and with a super scanner antenna I was hitting england very easy.

Leadfoot, check modulation pot and clean it. this sometimes causes squeal.
