Either I'm the only one in the forum that owns one of these or they never break down or they're not worth tricking out.I come here all the time looking for fatal flaws or people asking how to do this or that to them. They're either perfect as is or just not popular radios.

Bigbob, I have one and I think Karatebutcher just got one. I love mine! On SSB I usually use the Astatic 10DAL dynamic head on a TUP-9 base, and I get "What is that nice sounding radio? Kenwwood, Yaesu?" all the time. I had it modded up a little with new AM mod amp, voltage reg, shottky barrier diodes for AM detection and NB, low noise higher gain front end receiver transistor, and a complete align and tune done by SS8541. It has been over 2 years since then with nearly daily use, talking to all continents except Antartica and the Indian Subcontinent, no problems! It is also the baddest looking current production radio out there, bar none. I can see why some people prefer the 2985DX from RCI, but I hate the way those look! Shoving a 2950 into a big box is not an appealing design, it still has those 2 rows of tiny little mobile buttons, yuck! Doesn't even look like a real radio, IMO. But the have the same RF horsepower and audio as a 2517, just not the lovely "analog" look and feel.

Hey guys yes I also have the 2517 DX and really love it, I also have had a lot of good reports on it also, the only problem I have had is the NB/ANL Toggle switch on the front, it went south, push up and it drops, I contacked Galaxy and they stood behind it 100%, it is there now, the local tech wanted $80.00 to repaire it, Galaxy would send the part, it is still under warrenty, so all I have to do is wait.
One question , on ssb useing an amp, 5 watts max 15 watts pep out, on ssb, do you use the mike gain, or the RF gain power knob. I am sure it is the Mike gain only,as it seems to control the meter and shows the watts out pep on ssb. .
Have fun enjoy your radio, they are great.

I just use the RF power, turned all the way down for running an amp--This gives me just a hair under 2 watt carrier for AM, and around 12-15 watts pep on SSB. Mic gain rarely gets touched.

Highlander I was under the thought that on ssb the mike gain controls the watts out for ssb, put yours on ssb and turn the mike gain up and down and watch your meter on the radio or externial meter , if you have a chance e mail me ok.

Highlander I wrote Galaxy , they said to use the RF knob and if the radio was peaked and tuned and the limiters were taken out , adjust a little with the mike gain to bring it to 10 to 15 watts pep, so that is what I have been doing.

The 2517 is the base I tell people to get when they ask "where can I get a decent Saturn base?". I tell them it's the radio the Saturn should have been in the first place.

Just my two cents' worth.

Hello. I got my radio back today and it only took two weeks, Galaxy not only replaced the one toggle switch but replaced all of them, Aligned the radio, put it right on frequency, and tested it, they really did a good job. They stand behind their Warrenty,

Hello Forum,
I have a tech question that I will try to explain.
What would cause a old Galaxy saturn radio 5 band model to lose its frequency control on the high band switch position E 28.305
If you heat up the area with a hair drier around the vco or the pll chips or anywhere in the left front corner (the radio will stabilize and work properly.) If you follow the manual alignment procedures. The lower bands are all ok it just seems to start losing control at about channel 10
E-band. plus no 10k until you heat up the radio with a hair drier. I am at my wits end I have never seen this problem before. I need to clarify
the 10k problem. The 10k switch works on all bands until the higher freq. is switched in.
Very strange indeed.
Well I hope this makes any sense and somebody has any type of idea I am at my wits end.
Thanks,
Brian

I have a 2517 that will dead key all by itself (it doesnt transmit a signal just buries the needle and wont recive) i can tap the mic key and it will go back to normal operation. Is there a tech on the west coast that is reputable that i can send it to to get fixed and pumped up a bit
