I own a Glaxy 2517 radio. And like the radio very much. The trouble that im having for example. When the freq. counter is on channel 19 it reads 16.490. The freq. counter moves with the channels but reads wrong. The counter worked good for the first few months. But it would come and go on transmit and receve. Ive had the radio for three years. And the radio has worked very well other thin that. I don't know of a good teck that I would trust. Please help? Maybe its a simple fix that I could do. Thank you

Hello Highlander! Thanks for that email concerning my galaxy 2517. This tech that you referred me to I imagined he is somewhere out of state, I don't know anything about him. Maybe a little fearful of sending it out to someone I don't know. This day and time it is really hard to find a good tech. Twenty years ago, for every ten techs their might be only one good tech. There was a really good tech in Columbus Ohio by the name of Kilroy that specialized in Yazoos and heathkits. The man was capable of doing anything that you desired. He retired from the buisness. I am just afraid of sending my radio to someone that is a radio butcher. I could really tell you some stories of radio butchers with golden screwdrivers LOL> Please send me this information of where this tech is or anybody with good information of somebody that is closer to home. Thanks Highlander!

Most of my experience is on the outside of the radio, from scanning posts over the past several months I'd say 307 would be the most experienced tech in that field,as I said before I'm not a tech,I listen, read and apply.

Bob, if your soldering skills are up to it, looking for a poorly-soldered socket pin or 'flaky' connector is a safe enough place to start. Flexing the wire bundles that lead to the counter module would reveal a problem, if leaning on them causes the display to change in response.

If the "thump and wiggle" test on the counter wiring tells you nothing, I think most techs would check the one slug-tuned coil that feeds to the counter, and 'scope the power wire feeding the counter module, to see that it isn't being "starved".

If those two tests turn up nothing, swapping the counter "guts" module is the next logical step.

The gaps between foils on that particular circuit board are really narrow in a lot of places. If you are unsure of your soldering skills, don't practice on this one.

The counter/display module in that radio is found in a dozen brands, and dozens of products. They don't break down often, but that still means some lucky duck has a bum one now and again.

Oh, and I second the motion on 307. He seems to have the business of long-distance repairs figured out, and seems to know what's in that radio, too. You sure don't want a 'trainee' getting too deep into that one.

Bassbug,

I notice you are in Springfield.

Jump on 70 WEST go to 75 NORTH and head North then get off on Exit 99. go to top of ramp turn left go to first road and turn left. You will See MOVIN ON ELECTRONICS.

Very Large Shop (room for 8 - 18 wheelers in the lot).

They are Very Good and Reasonable and Generally have three or 4 Techs on hand.

Just before you get to 99 exit look to your left and you will see it.

Hope this helps, as it is close to your home and maybe a 45 minute drive.

Bassbug,

Exit 99 on 75 North is ANNA Ohio.

From Springfield, OH. take 68 South to 4. 4 will take you to 75 West to about Mile marker 33 and jump on 75 North it will be about 33 miles north to Mile marker 99 exit (Anna).

Just a short drive for you.
