Hello,

Have a couple KL-400's and they both will meter about 125 watts max on am or ssb when the mike is talked into. Work just great overall. Both have only a few minutes use at low to mid setting except for this test.

SWR are 1 : 1.1 to 1 : 1.2 over 11 meters, using 2 stock cb's and 1 ham transceiver. Meters used are MFJ-267 and/or Aries 460.

Is this expected output?
Thought SSB modulated output would be higher.

Thanks,
Climber

I get a *little* bit more than that on SSB, but not enough to be noticeable on the air. I drive it with a Lincoln with output set to peak a little under 20 watts, and see around 150-160 on a PDC600 meter. I'd say you are fine, nothing wrong with the amps.

Climber, on my 351 Mod V (the older version of the 400), 125 watts is about max for it on AM, but I am able to get more on SSB from my Lincoln. It peaks at about 30 watts so with the amp in-line with 13.8 volts, I can get about 180 watts PEP. Are your meters a PEP meter(s) or just reading RMS (sorry, I'm unfamiliar with those)?

I would expect more on SSB but it may depend on what transceiver is driving it.

Thanks Guys for helping,

I have a stock Mobile TR-696-F and a 148 stock from 1990, and a Icom-746.

Meters are RMS as far as I read so far. Thought SSB would be even 1 watt higher than AM when modulating.

I am very happy with everything from Copper Elec. Just "Love" this product (KL-400) but need some education. Also am thankful for this forum and the helpful members.

Considering that on AM 400 Watts true PEP modulated power is around 100 Watts AVERAGE power, you may be right on the money, if your meter is truly an "average-only" meter. A whistle with the mike gain full up on SSB will get you a larger reading, but usually still below the actual peak power.
