The talk back on my sons RCI-2950 works great on AM but when you switch to SSB it sounds bad. It is all muffled, jumbled and can't understand a word coming out of it. Is this normal?? I never run talk back with an SSb radio before so I don't know if this is normal or not. Also we have an inline freq. counter that goes ape on side band, won't read. I figured that was normal because it does it with my 146 gtl when it is on SB or is it not?? How would I go in and put a on/off switch to the talk back? Not sure how they have it wired.

Yes, normal. TB on Rangers and ssb galaxies is like that on ssb and FM. |

Yes, that's the nature of them. However, RF Limited has a talkback board that you can install that will let you hear yourself in any mode.
Actually, all it is, is a small audio amplifier. It is not of a beedback design. It is called the RF Limited UTB. You might want to check with Copper and see if they sell them.
Since you bought that radio used, I wonder if the original owner had the sense to put a switch in circuit to turn the talkback off when it's being used on sideband. If it doesn't have one and you do want one, let me know and I'll Email you the information on how to install one. It's quite easy.
By the way, that radio really shines on sideband and also has some great AM power and audio capabilities. Those radios are screamers when setup correctly. Email me at if you're interested.
I still have three of the old model RCI-2950s and have no desire to part with. In my opinion, the old models were the best ones.

Yes I would like the information on turning off the talk back. It gets real annoing listening to the gargle when you talk ssb. I have always liked the 2950's, never owned one but friends have them. Shoot I don't even own this one, my kid is the one that bought it the other day. He is nice though and lets me talk on it. He said if I was bad he would ground me fom it, guess I hafta be good.

inklink, talkback is achived usually on the 2950 by clipping one end of d-78 if this is the case just install a spst switch and run two wires from each side of d78 to the switch, this will make it easy to turn off when in ssb mode, if u want to just remove it check and see if the diode is still intact, if it is not install a IN914 type diode in it place (make sure no one cut the trace on the board also) hope this helps, chris |

To improve audio quality of the talk-back, open D-115 (cut one leg). Some say to add a small value capacitor in place of D-115 but the cap my deminish RX audio quality, so don't bother with the cap. |
