307 : Frankly concerning radio output power I haven't been able to figure out who is right or wrong , so I decided to spend a little money and find out who was full of play doh.I just received my new Galaxy 99 with Turbo Tune from a company in the great state of Texas.I disconnected my present 99 ( purchased from Copper a few years back) and hooked up the new 99 anxious to see it do it's thing. On lowest power it dead keyed 2 watts and had a 25 watt swing .On highest power it dead keyed 6 watts and had a twenty five watt swing. This is identical to what my old 99 is doing with the exception that I paid $30.00 for a peak & tune on the old radio and I paid $65.00 for the turbo tune.I don't know ,it may do what they said on a dummy load ,but I don't talk on a dummy load.As I sit here looking at the invoice I'm a little disappointed but this is not the first time I've been taken and anyway I did it to try and get the truth I could see and touch.

Amen , At least someone is seeing what I have seen for many years...My saying is still , there is no magic in peaking a radio. Never was , never will be. BANK that the Turbo Tune took 15 minutes. I must admit , with the covers off I can do it in 5...hehehe

how can anyone go through a complete tune/peak/alignment of a radio in 5 minutes? there is no way the rx & tx section can be peaked in 5 minutes, much less guarantee the rest of the radio meets specs.

Well , it is all based on the radios I have done in the past. With the covers OPEN , Signal Generator hooked to the antenna connector , It is rocket fast. You can screwdriver the CB to the point where it will not even transmit or receive (screwdriver only , no blown components or removed parts that is) and I could realign it WITH a frequency counter and Generator in about 5 minutes. This includes the NB circuit. This again is not magic , it is simple when you have done so many and know where to probe the counter as well as know which sequence to go through. I start with the PLL Lock Detector , Hit the VCO till it locks , Drive a signal in through the antenna connector and hit the string of RX Transformers , then key up with a scope on the output and hit the string of TX transformers. Then peak the output stages along with the TX Frequency setup (TX Frequency and 10.240 Reference). The KEY is to see if the Green/Red LED is changing to RED on TX. If is is not , the PLL is out. (pending screwdriver only as described above). I can look at the LED and determine if indeed the PLL is locked. Once it is it is RX , TX , Peak...Thats it. At the same time with my S/A I can set the 54 Mhz trap for TVI. A last test is to inject 100 uV and set the meter to S-9...Box it up , send it off...I would say that most people could not do it this fast but AGAIN , it is the number of CB's I have done that saves me the time.

so you can take a NEW radio and peak the rx/tx and do a complete alignment in 5min. b4 you ship it out to a customer?

that is a great deal different from taking a radio that has been "screwdrivered out of alignment", and putting it back into "operating" conditions. many techs can do that.

Number 1 , I do not sell radios.

Number 2 , I said I could do it , and yes a NEW radio (with the covers off because this takes longer to do than the conversion and peak).

Number 3 , You are CORRECT , A screwdrivered radio is much harder to do than a new radio conversion / peak-out.

Number 4 , The reason? I wrote most of the service information on a lot of them from the beginning and know what to turn.

Number 5 , Most techs COULD do it , you are right.

Number 6 , The only techs that CAN't do it are the ones you hear people complain about , read some of the postings above.

Number 7 , Have a great weekend.

Number 8 , If you paid $65.00 for someone to "Turbo Tune" and do the freq mod on an export radio, YOU HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF!

Yes I paid $65.00 strictly as a test to find out if the radio would do what was advertised .It will not so my mission was accomplished .It was a one time deal and well worth the money to see these people show their true colors.

Don't take this to the bank as gospel truth concerning every amp ever made since the invention of amplifiers, but every 10 meter amp (transistor & tube type ) I have owned has worked fine on 11 meter.Since 1975 I have owned over sixty amps.I'm getting older now and winding down some on the hobby so I now only own three amps, one in the mobile ,one on the base ,and a sometime driver for the base when the need arises.

The turbo tune mentioned here from my experience is a joke. Some guys just do a standard tune and charge extra and call it turbo, then there are guys out there that change waaayyyyy to many things and actually get more out of the radio but the down side to it is the radio won`t last. Everyone would like to get a big swing out of the smallest radio but they are only made to do what they can with the parts installed. Is like limiters, they have their limits. My old GrantXL has been a fav of mine for years, there is a tech in my area that says he can get 25 watts out of it,right now I am getting 20 the same as when I first peaked it out. The radio has lasted 11 years without fail, I am getting a Voyage VR9000 and am putting the Grant in my truck, I may with changing the AM regs and the Audio power amp and see what happens..
