There has been several discussions concerning the KL-500. I now have one. HURRAY! Great COPPER amp. So, as near as I can tell, the spec's say the input power should be 1-15Watts AM and 2-30Watts SSB.
I'm using 5W AM and 20W SSB. What is the MOST efficient?
I'm using a ICOM706MKIIG. It will go down to about 1 or 2 Watts. My meter is not that accurate to say which.... |

good question i have the same amp and have been wondering the same thing.I run 4 w am and sideband about 20w.But soon im going to run a HR 2510 and i think they run about 40 watts SSB you think i should lower it?ir will it be ok?thanks. |

25 watts peak is the best all-round input ssb it'll take more but it's your money,why push it,and if your radio has lots of swing like mine 2 watts dk,32 peak 2 watts dead key is just about right,oh by the way mine also peaks 45 on ssb if I let it,I have a boomer 400 same number and size of pills,so I'd say the kl500 is just about the same in performance.I got lucky with this amp it is the cleanest I ever owned no fuzz on modulation at 2 miles or 90 miles and no splatter.Bigbob |

For AM, try and give it a 1:4 ratio, meaning if you deadkey 25 watts, it should swing to 100. Adjust your deadkey for that (the numbers above are obviously an example only as the 500 puts out more watts than that).
If you can get it to deadkey 50 and swing 200, deadkey 60 and swinging 240, etc. That is a good ratio, although 1:3 will also work if that's the best you can get.
Most HR 2510's swing to around 30 watts on SSB. Higher than what it calls for but I ran my Lincoln into the Mod 351/P (now called the KL 400 mobile) and it performed flawlessly. Still works although not inline with the Lincoln anymore. I personally would run it and monitor the heat. Mine would get hot on AM if longwinded, but rarely a problem on SSB unless long keydowns modulating. Of course, the ratio mentioned above is not applicable for SSB.
