Both my 2970 and my 2995 DX have the very same problems. Very garbled receive on FM but crystal clear and clean on SSB and AM. Moving clarifier does help some but there is still noticable distortion and garble on the receive on FM...
Any help from 307 or any tech is helpful.. Please, no putdowns on RCI radios or other snide remarks.. I dont want to hear it. I just want some help on why im having problems with BOTH radios and is this problem common or just a fluke with my radios.... TY

My RCI 2985-DX sounds good on FM receive and transmit although i dont use it on FM very much. Your radio probably needs a RX-TX alignment and calibration done by a good tech. Most radios come out of the factory just ball parked because they dont have the time to do it right. Hope this helps clear things up.

Usually the FM is not touched , there is really nothing to "tune" in the FM mode. Typically the FM will sound a little tight , when you say garbled , do you mean that you flat out can't understand the other station?

Q. Are you trying to talk between these two radios?

Q. Have you tried FM with someone else a mile or more away.

Sometimes poorly designed IF limiters can be overloaded and they begin to oscillate and cause this symptom. If you haven't tried it at a distance, take the 2970 down the road a mile and see if they clear up.

CM3885,-My new 2950dx does the same thing on fm & I have heard others say theirs do too,. So not a copper problem, but a RCI problem they are not going to fix. Just recieved my new 2970dx today,& fully expect same results. P.S. using split up 3 kc's helps a little , but wouldnt you think a company like ranger would have done something by now.Makes me weary bout opening this new 2970dx.

Guys, there is a FM frequency adjustment on those radios for FM. I think it is L4.It has been awhile. You would have to have a radio or someone to help tune it in for you to go by if you are attempting it yourself. I got one on freq on TX and RX and just use it to to tune my others in with. The garbled sound means it is off freq. When you tune L4 the freq counter will not change on the radio. There is nothing that Ranger did wrong since these radios were aligned from the factory for 10 and 12 meters not 11 which we do when we get them. So,that means you have to realign the FM vfo section for 11 meters. It seems that the FM is most effected by the conversion then the other areas. Ranger will align them for you for a fee if the dealer sends them in. Dont be so quick to lay blame on a company for building a radio that was not intended to be used how we use them. RCI has built about 90% of all radios on the market for over 10 years.

fm is demodulated from the .455mhz 2nd i.f., so it doesn't matter what the rx frequency is, it is always shifted to .455mhz for demodulation. sorry to say, but here the blame would be on rci, becuause if fm demod is off in one band, it is off in all bands. you are not adjusting the freq here(L4), you are adjusting a filter that passes a certain freq (.455mhz).

FM Distortion:
Change the RF generator to the FM mode, 1mV RF carrier level, FM modulated with a 1 KHz audio tone ± 3 KHz modulation level.
Adjust L5 for minimum distortion.

this is from the service manual per Ranger
