Hi everyone,
I have a KLV-350. After I transmit and unkey the mic, the relay inside the amp chatters until I put it in standby mode. I've tried 3 different length jumpers between the radio and amp (found this idea searching on these forums), but it still does the same thing. Does anybody have any other ideas what causes this and a possible solution?

Check your SWR between the radio and the amp using a short jumper and the regular line.

OK, I checked the SWR between the radio and amp with my meter and another jumper. So now it goes radio, jumper, meter, jumper, amp. I tested with a 4 watt dead key. The SWR with the amp in stby is 1.1:1. The SWR with amp on is 1.2:1. Marconi, you're brilliant, because now it unkeys the amp with no relay chatter, the way it should be. I guess my only question now is WHY?

I guess it is just all in the angle of the dangle, (joke).
By placing the extra jumpers in line, you probably made the system a bit more stable and maybe it was RF keeping the key in. Hard to say, but who cares as long as it works.
For sure, reading the SWR between the radio and the amp is an important measurement, and your numbers look very good.
Not always, but sometimes a sign of this problem can be noted by watching what is going on with the meter in your radio, assuming it is a good meter. Watch for an increased indication for your dead key.
Maybe this will give you and idea of how long the jumper should be if you do not wish to run a meter there.

hey marconi what up brother long time no words, could just be a sticky relay also but i agree alot can be told by watching what goes on with a meter inline

Scott I believe that sometimes a particular line can produce a little RF at the radio and that might not be desirable. With some amps this might affect the keying relay like you were noticing. Sometimes 3' will work OK, and other times the line from the radio to the amp has to be longer. Whatever length that works will probably show the best SWR for the radio to the amp. Just play around with some different length jumpers and maybe you will see this happen. |
