What do people mean when they say BIG RADIO? Is it a radio with a high power output? Is it a radio with alot of "toys" like roger beep, echo, voice effects etc...?

In my area, it pretty much just means a setup that has a strong signal and phat modulation. My tiny little Roadpro Titan II is a "big radio", because it has a freind next to it, lol.

A BIG radio is one that sounds BIG!

I have a Uniden Pro 510 that people cannot tell what it is when I am useing it. Dead Keys 3 watts and swings 6 People on the other end only know what you tell them.

Heck for two weeks I used my Old Teaberry Stalker 202 on the CEF Nets and was making contacts barefoot and everyone said it sounded Great, with Good Clear Modulation. My Opinion is ANY Radio that is Properly Tuned and a Good Quality Microphne can sound BIG!

I think it was putting out 5 Million Watts by my old 1875 SWR/WATT Meter that Karatebutcher gave me.

We have CEF Members that Check in from their Base Stations and then go Mobile and still sound good and when Skip / Conditions are rolling you cannot tell the difference.

Tech833 and myself have talked many, many times on his STOCK HR2510 clear as a bell and me on the Teaberry.

Just my 2 cents worth on BIG RADIOS.

Big Radio acording to Sparkomatic: You know you have a big radio if people have to look at the S meter to get an idea where you are........in other words your audio is loud and if you are 1 mile or 5 miles away you sound the same.
A big radio may not be able to key some people out but it will scare them.

I agree with Sparkomatic!! in my area (south eastern rhode island) a "BIG RADIO" is one that has clear loud audio no mater if there out side your 20 or on the other side of town. i run a superstar 3900 bare foot its one of the "big radio's) in my area and i got a cheap echo/roger beep mike on it. like tech808 said any radio tuned right and with the right equipment can be a big radio, well sound like one any way =)

Something that can be heard at lest. Even a Rat Shack could be one if it is heard. But in the other hand a Radio that has all the bells and whistles.

hey blackbeard you answered your own question.
BIG RADIO is a truckers term for the 10 meter conversions
loud audio, massive channels, all those built in goodies you mentioned and high power right out of the box $$

Big Radio is a system that puts out good clean quality signal and especially a very very clean and smooth modulation without all the overdriving and destortion ect.
The audio is whats heard by others not the power.

Those base stations down in Texas on channel 6. Those are big radios. When your radio can take the most weakest DX conditions and be heard all over the land loud and clear........you have a big radio.

A radio with a good tone and loud audio. Monster modulation that is crisp and clear. That is a big radio. OR a base station strapped to your dash could be called a BIG RADIO.
