Dan- I had a TH-79ADH and liked it alot. Not much difference (I don't think) in the 78 to 79, but check out product reviews in Eham (http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/49) The 79 was an awesome little radio, rugged and had excellent audio. I used it with my TM-V-7a to cross-band and worked terrific! The rig is also capable of "remote controlling" another Kenwood rig (like the 7a or 733a, etc) via DTMF...and actually you can do it with any HT, but the 79 had the scrolling menu to help you along. Good luck--Kirk
