hey guy's I'm new to the forum but wanted to ask for input on somethin from the old pros. On the TX Star DX series (HDV) is it really just as simple as pulling the OCB and bypassing the choke? I'm thinkin more than that but just a sneaking suspicion. Any input?

actually only as a reference point for hi-med-lo. if you know it always keys to X and swings to Y at each stage, or you vary it to Z, but you key it up today and it swings down, or keys way higher or lower, something's wrong. swr went poof, or radio power was changed, etc. use a guide.

I'm not sure I understand. The Texas star amps aren't ready to go when you buy them? I have an older Texas star, and it was ready to go (early 90's vintage). Actually the reason I set up this acct was I wanted to ask how I can check to see if my "finals" are still ok. Its been a number of years since I've used the amp, and I never reduced the wattage on the xmitter. I used to hook it to a Cobra 19 plus, and I think it was putting out about 6 watts. Reading the message bases here implies that perhaps its a good idea to drop your wattage down to about 2 watts with the cheaper amps? One specifically avail from copperelectronics.comes to mind, was about 50$ and tech801 or whatever reccommended strongly to drop the wattage of your xmitter down to about 2 watts.

Anyway, back on subject. What do you mean modify the Texas star to make it an AMP. I was considering buying a new one if there is something wrong with my old one, but I was hoping it was ready to go out of the box.

if your old TS worked when you last used it, there's no reason it should not work now. was cobra 19+ keying 6 watts,(i wouldn't bet on it) or swinging 6 watts? which TS amp? hdv version? true honest to goodness dead key on accurate meter of 2 to less then 4 watts would be best for a non-hd TS.
for legal reasons, new TS are 10meter transmitters and by disabling xmtr oscillator you turn it back into an amplifier. no major surgery.
