I am looking to purchase another amp from copper.
I already own a KLV 200.
I am looking for another one. I was looking at the KLV 400. However the KLV 550 looks interesting. My concern is that I do not cause TVI.
I have a low pass filter in line & with my KLV 200 I cause no TVI.
Will the KLV 550 cause TVI? I know that solid state devices like the 550 are not as clean unless serious steps are taken to avoid interference.
Does the 550 cause more TVI then the glass 400?
Also, what TVI filter is the best & what steps can I take to minimize TVI, channel splash, etc?

Would someone answer this question, if they can??. I'm thinking about purchasing the KLV 200, simply because it is a 1 tuber, and it reminds me of the old JB 12 and JB 150 drivers of the past. I plan on getting the best TVI filter that I can. My current apartment base set-up is a TRC-431 base, and a 6 ft wilson silver-load, mounted on a truck mirror mount, which is attached to a 3x3 sq ft metal table. I really get out with this set-up, and like I said, I'm hoping that the 1 tube KLV 200 will not drive my neighbors crazy. Thanks in advance.

2 more questions. Is 4 watts to much drive for the KLV 200. And finally, most tube amps have the load/tune knobs on the front. The KLV 200 has 1 knob. Is that knob a load or tune, and how would you adjust it? Thanks.

On the KLV 200 I would HIGHLY SUGGEST a 2 to 2- 1/2 Watt Drive.
The KLV-200 Has ONE KNOB on the Front marked TUNE.
As for how to adjust it I have never used one but The owners manual will explain the proper procedure for you to use.

Have you checked your swr readings with your mobile antenna/metal table setup? You could damage the amp if your swr is too high, and I was never able to get a good reading until I was able to mount a proper base antenna.
As for the KLV-200, I have one and it is marked "Tune". You merely turn it to get the best reading on your meter,(also, the red light glows brightest when tuned) then you can back it off a bit. I guess that decouples the amp.
I don't see much difference between low and high power settings, and get around 175 watts on SSB. No TVI, but all my gear is grounded to a grounding rod. |
