Hear is a question, I have a 2 meter Mobil Mag mount antenna to use on my base 2 meter radio, how will it preform if I place it in a metal pie pan, or if I use the very top of the metal Water heater, what is bestground ? is a pie pan ok.

The more metal you have under the antenna, the better it will perform. A pie pan just isn't going to cut it since it's not that much larger in diameter that the magnet itself. The more metal under the antenna, the further away it will be heard.

Hey Kb, Pie Pan, are you crazy? When I first got my two meter all I had was a mobile with a mag mount, so I mounted a CAKE pan on a fence with the mag mount on it, I hit a repeater about 15 miles away no problem, and was in business!! Cake pans are designed to be a much larger groundplane, hahha |

The top of the water heater is really working fine, they are hearing me really well off the Reapeter now. |

a gnd plane at cb freqs need to be a minimum of 19" in all directions from the center of the antenna base. of course this is for a flat surface gnd plane. |

It really works well on the water heater I will leave her there.
It seems all the guys around here stay on 2 meter frequency, 146640, but I hear a lot of guys on frequencys that are not in the book. |

I really think 2 meter is a lot of fun to talk on and in most cases to just listen, it seems to be a family Frequency.
I am ordering a Mag mount antenna from Copper for my HT so I can have some height at the lake. |
