Well I have owned the FT-2400, and the FT-1500 and the FT-2800.

By Far I enjoy and like the FT-2800 the Best.

Good Power, Redesigned so the Complete Case is a Giant Heat Sink and the Display is Good and Bright with a LARGE Readout easy to see.

Very Easy for Beginner's and experienced Ham's to use.

And I like those Little Stubby Leg's for Base Use.

It get's *****+ and a from me on Performance and Looks.

As for an HT the YAESU FT-50-R hands down the BEST HT I have ever Used.

Can you Tell I only Use Yaesu Ham Equipment.

I like the looks and features of the 2800, there is one in my future. I do have the 8900, but I want the 2800 for my mobile. My handy tlky is a Kenwood, older model, but works fine.

I think any one of the BIG THREE would be a excellant radio (not just GOOD). I bit the bullet a few years ago and bought an ICOM706MKIIG. I wanted a radio that I could use as I learned more in the hobby and increased my ticket. Trouble is, I can't pass the code test.... Anyway, the features on this radio are so diverse that it has taken me a few years to be comfortable and understand how to use them.

I had a Radio shack HT that is now discontinued that only put out 500mw, but worked fine on the 2M repeaters here.

I only have ONE complaint (okay maybe more later) and that is the tendancy of the industry to make the radios smaller and smaller. I want to see a good size radio sitting there! I know my radio was meant for mobile installation, but I use it in the radio room. I've got a beautiful Ranger AR-3500 in the pickup.

Ca346,

Look around for a GOOD Used Yaesu FT- 23R, Rugged, dependable and easy to use about 6" w/keypad x 2 1/4" x 2" if I remember right and easy to use.

808:

Does the FT-24 have a DTMF capability? They want $60 for the DTMF microphone for my 706. I did a search on E-Bay for the FT-24 and came up with zero.
