I have a Pyramid PS 26KX that does 22amps constant and 25amps surge. I was wondering how big an amp it would run efficiently.

Around 200. But remember, you NEVER want to tax your power supply to its limits. And never run your radio and amplifier from the same power supply. Get yourself a little 10 or 12 amp supply just for the radio.

Thanks again Jeff. I have Pyramid PS 14 that does 12 amps constant for the radio, and then have been using the PS 26KX for a Palomar 250, but it only does about 170 on a whistle. But am waiting for my 2970 DX to come in next week and will probably retire the Cobra 148 GTL. But I was curious to see what I could efficiently run on the other power supply. To be honest I was hoping it might push something like 300 watts since I think the Palomar is fading and I do want a good back up.

You're very welcome Bob. That's what Coppers Forum is all about. We have fun but most of all, all of us learn new things from each other.
Question.. Are you seeing this 170 watts on A/M or on SSB? And here's something else you may want to consider.
When taking a RF-power reading, do not whistle into the Mic. Say a long AUUUUUUUU. Even though you may not see as high a RF reading as you do when whistling, that's OK because when you stop and think about it, no one speaks at the pitch of a whistle anyways.
So, in reality, the reading you are seeing when whistling into the Mic means nothing, unless you can actually speak at that pitch.

Thats pretty funny but makes sense. If I speak into the Mic. I get up to 150 on a peak rf once in awhile. Most of the time it stays around 100 or less.
So what would be a good amp. to look at running with that power supply? The Palomar starts dropping power after a few minutes of use and sometimes turns itself off, and am thinking about replacing it.
