I was just plaing around with a Radio Shack field strength meter and noticed that where I sit in front of the radio when on high power the FS meter shows a pretty high reading. I do not know if these meters are ment to read FS in a radio room. But I was wondering if there is a simple way to be sure I'm not being over exposed? |

Bob_p You are not over-exposed when playing in the CB band. Caution should be taken when using high power in the UHF and above frequencies. Most of the RF that your Radio Shack meter is sensing is the RF that is floating around, is coming from your antenna. You are not in any danger of being over-exposed. However, if you feel that you are, you can always wrap yourself in tinfoil while transmitting. All kidding aside, I don't believe any Ham or CBer one has ever died of radiation exposure from operating their radios. If there was any kind of danger, it would be noted somewhere on the radio itself. Jeff Tech548 |

LOL Thanks Jeff I appreciate the clearification.I have been praticing the General test at QRZ, and one of the questions has to do with RF exposure and it made me begin to think. The tinfoil idea does sound pretty cool though. I can wrap myself in tinfoil get a football helmit wrap it in tinfoil add foil antennas grap hold of that Silver Eagle and it should help me get out right? Well maybe not... Thanks again Jeff Bob |

Ya know, there is the potential for eye damage isn't there? That's why the antennas are supposed to be behind us in mobile ops and up on the roof in the QTH. Bob_P Have you already passed the code? Or going for the General and then the code like KB? |

Ca346 The VEC's up here want me to do both at the same time. I was going to do just what KB did, but they asked if I would wait until I had 5 wpm down. They suggested that the FCC might make their decision before I had the code down, and at the rate I'm going they might be right. |

Karatebutcher Only on very special request. What makes it really tough is I live in Southern Ca. and I hate that airport in Bloomington. But the whiskers could act as a ground plane hmm... |
