Im upgrading my charging system to accomodate a Dave made 2x4 and thought I should add a second Optima yellow top.A friend suggested a battcap, supposedly a small battery with a capacitor built in weighing about 4 pounds.
Anyone heard of these or used one???
Your impressions???
Should I stick to the plan of higher output alternator and second battery run in parralel??
Any help appreciated!

depends on what your ride is, azstorm. see my post under open forum, palomar vs. klv. that was 2-2879x8-2879, i had plenty of current, and no voltage drop. unless you're driving a yugo with a 30 amp alternator, your 2x4 doesn't need all that much. a 65 amp alt w/2 BIG batteries (850 cca or more) probably won't dim the headlights, and chances are it's already bigger than 65 amps.
my setup, with a 4th battery swung 21-2879's to 3000 watts, though i don't know how long that alt was going to continue it.

Its a '91 Toyota 4x4 with a 4 cyl.
I kind of wanted to get setup for future upgrades as well.
You never know when youll want more power!
The stock alt puts out about 70 amps,do you think Id be ok with just an additional battery???

put in 2 BIG batteries, shoot for aftermarket 1000+ cca and upgrade all your cables, ground and positive. with a 2x4 pill you'll be fine. check w/local auto electrical shop, and ask them what they can do to a stock toy alt to get it over 100 amps with reliability. then grab a 4x4 mag from your local newsstand and check thru it for aftermarket welding kits/alternators and see what's available. by the time you're done with all upgrades for a 160+ amp alt, you'll probably be around a grand. one other possibility is to check w/toyota dealer parts dept and see if they came with anything bigger, may be a direct bolt in, get from a junkyard & have auto electrical shop check it out for you.
your 2x4 amp probably only drawing 50-60 amps or less, with no accessories on, as long as you have enough battery, you'll be fine.
the cheapest, easiest to duplicate set up in my chevy was always the one with the least problems. never had amperage problems, everybody EXCEPT the auto electric shop told me i would too. my 1200+ watts just cruised along.

Sounds like a plan to me!
Nothing is ever cheap,is it?Wallet and wifey wont be too happy but I think I'll stick to my plan of a larger alt. and a second battery.
Thanks for the input PZZ!
