I will try and keep this short. I am an electronics technician, Did 8 years in the Navy as a bench tech. Now I work in radio/television, so I have ALOT of knowledge, and hands on: BUT

There seems to be a facination of something called "swing" in the radio hobby. I have seen various ratios, and power levels, etc, but I guess what my question is...what exactly is it???

According to AM theory, from carrier (dead key) to 100% modulation, output power will increase 4 times. So, a 25 Watt dead key, should produce 100 Watt PEP at full modulation. This would be a typical "stock" setup. Now, working in radio, I know you can do over 100% POSITIVE modulation, but its not physically possible to exceed 100% negative modulation. Is that what swing is? More Positive modulation?

How much is a sweet spot? I know from working in radio, that AM radio stations can legally do +125% positive, and what that does is make a station sound "louder" without appreciably affecting audio quality. Anything beyond +125, and noticeable distorsion creeps up...

Just wondering...

this is called positive carrier shift. the neg peaks are still at %100 or less (no flatlining) so that there is no distortion. this is the idea behind the neg peak compression or npc mod that you may have heard about. you may have already known all of this.

as far as your question goes, its all in the "ear" of the beholder. but for the most part, most of these cb's will sound good when they are peaked to the point right b4 the positive peaks begin to flattop (still nice and round). and that is even when the neg peaks are flatlining.

Put a 1kz tone in mike on tx (11 mt am tx) tune for max output
and you will get a good swing on tx
on the older and some of the newer radios

(2SC1979 radios)

It is the same as for the older dx radio. On the newer dx radio I really can not see why you would want to do it. They do well enough with the proper tuning.
