Hey guys, I need a little help. I used to enjoy cb's as a hobby a few years ago when growing up. but, since then i have not kept up with what is good and what is not. I am now looking for a cb to go in my truck while travelling on my job, but i dont know too much about these things anymore. I just want to get the best 40 ch CB for under $199. I want something with good receive and good modulation after being tuned. I used to swear by the old 29ltd classics....they were awesome. but, i have heard they are junk now. someone please give me some insight into this. i just need the best plain ol' trucker cb out there. nothing fancy. thanks for the help. I would have look at the TR296 GK Copper has same as a cobra 148gtl has ssb can be moded for upper an lower Ch,san not a bad price. |

Why not get as much radio as you can under $200? How about the new Magnum 257? If all I had was $200 for a radio this would be my no 1 choice. Unless I could find one with a great big s-unit meter. Ha...

if you don't want SSB, and a modded 10meter radio is acceptable to you, go with magnum S3 or M1. may be more operator friendly to a non-ham then a magnum 257. uniden pc78 for an AM only real cb, or the texas ranger for the SSb real cb...

Look at the Voyage VR9000 also. So simple to mod also. |

thanks a lot guys....i havent looked much at the mag 257's until now due to the fact that i'm more used to the old school cb's. however, i have heard a lot of great things about the 257 and i am beginning to think that is the way to go. i have some experience with this sort of radio since i used to have a cherokee 1000 base that was modified for 400 channels and SSB. (what a piece of junk that thing was!) anyway, thanks for all the help. i think i see a mag 257 in my future! bg |

BGray, you will probably never have trouble resaling the Mag 257 either. It's an investment. Copper continues to offer so many choices in radios. Even if I had $500 to spend there's a good chance I would go with the Magnum 257 now knowing what I know. It's not the only radio but it has all the modern features and is much more than a cb radio--of course!

I like the fact that they are still a legitimate 10 meter radio, even after modding them for 11. Plus they are just cool, especially with the new blue display. |

That's good to know, Highlander, I have a dx2517 base that is not a legitimate 10 meter radio anymore since it was converted. It goes no higher than 28.315. As good as it performs I would have gone with something else had I know this before my purchase. I'm sure someone around my area will trade me out of it someday. I have to say that my Lincoln remained a true 10 meter and I'm respecting this radio the more I use it. The flowers keep coming in. But this Magnum 257 looks like a better deal when you stack up features, performance and especially cost--even size is a factor. This 257 looks about the size of a small 2 meter radio. It looks so much like my 1990 Icom 2 meter. It's cool.

Does the S-9 have the frequency range of the 257 when modded for 11 meter? (does it still have 10?). Also can dual finals be added to the 257 to get more punch? Or if coin is not the issue would one be better off just getting the S-9?
I'm looking at another radio for my new truck, and am stuck between a magnum or a connex 4800 |

Most Bang for the buck is definetely a Uniden 78, or the Uniden 68, that is if you don't want a built in SWR measurement (Which I never use anyway). I own 2 Uniden 78's. One with a variable, and one without.

Some good suggestions for sure. For a regular c.b. set the Uniden 68 and 78 Elite models are tough to beat. If you want SSB as well go Galaxy 979. |

For just a strict cb 40 channel am radio (if you can stand the baby retangular s-unit meter) I have personally heard two Uniden PC68 model mobile radios and they are loud! The price is good also, under $100.
