I have a palomar super modulator 1 mobile amp w/2 2sd1446 pills. I was wondering if I can swap in 2 MRF454 pills? Or do i need to modify some other circuts? I am trying to get the extra 20 watts if i use the MRF454 pills. I drive this amp with a uniden pc 68 xl with 3 watt DK.

don't waste time, effort or $. you're probably doing 100-150 watts right now, nobody would notice the difference the 20 watts would provide. if they're still available, galaxy 350 elite or palomars version of it with 2-2290's for about the same price as the SM-1 would probably get you enough more out to notice a difference. or save the bucks up & go after a 2-2879 amp(like texas star dx 350)better bang for the buck all around.

Dxmodulator,

Unless the 1446's are bad, I personally would not waste the time or money to replace them for 20 watts difference as no one will be able to tell the difference on the other end as it will not even move their S-meter 1 S-unit.

If it is working now save the time and money for a biger amp down the line.

Just my nickels worth,

cool thanx for the info. I do want to get a bigger better amp what are some good ones and does copper offer them. Also what would be the total out put of the texas ranger 396F after and good peak and tune. Another words can this radio be turned into a Super swinging radio?? I am thinking of getting one to run bare foot mobile.

everything is relative, DX. mostly relative to $$$. but it starts with-base or mobile, then what are you trying to do/how many watts will this require, what radio will you be building off of, before doing major mods to a radio or buying a new one, make sure that it will be compatible with the type of amp set up you will be running.
