I just hooked up an old eletro-voice desk top mic up to my base, I got back reports that the audio was alot lower tha my d-104 hand held. one of the mods is vr7 or remove Q16 i think this the mod limiter. will i have to worry about bleed over in a neighborhood if the limiter is removed? there is no mic gain adjustment on the radio or mic. thanks |

619, yes you will bleed over on your neighbors. removing the mod. limiter may make your meters go crazy but thats mostly because of all the additional harmonics that you are creating. they dont help your signal, but they will create bleedover on phones, tv's, and the like.
how old is that EV mic? if it was originally for a tube radio then you are probably having impedance matching problems. or the carbon mic element in it has gone bad. sometimes you can "wake up" an old mic by banging the front of it into the palm of your hand a few times. also take the reports you get with a grain of salt. some people will tell you you saund different just to have something to talk about.

619,Kidvicious was correct on both his deductions.clipping the limiter wont help in this case,being caused by an impedence mismatch.the radio is lo-z and the mic is hi-z.you can put a matching transformer in the mic in the order of 400:1000 ohm but nowadays it would be easier to find a good transistorized mic to use on the radio.in the case of some of the "old"E-V's,if it is indeed a carbon or electrostatic film type,they wouldnt be worth the trouble trying to get them to work on a more modern radio. |

Thanks for your reply. I talked to a couple of locals and they all said the modulation was very low. the mic is either a 619 or 719 model.It was fun just wiring the mic .I will keep it on top of the base because it is vintage. I am going to leave the limiter in and go back the my good ol' D-104. 619 |
