The tune matches the tubes output to the proper operating frequency.Tune it first for MAX ALWAYS.The load adjusts the coupling of the amp to the antenna.Tune it for max and then rotate it about 1/4 turn slightly to the right to decouple it a little.This will give the swing you are looking for.Touch up the tune again after the load.Dont forget to tune the gridtune on back for max.It matches the output of the radio to the amps input.Sort of an swr thing.

what is the most you can Dk into the maverick amp ... i have been told no more than 4W.

I wouldnt drive it with more than 4 to 5 watts because thats about all the driver tubes need to drive the final tubes to its proper output.More than that and you just destroy your drivers.Why they called the back tuner a grid tune is beyond me because it really goes to the cathodes of the driver tubes and not to the grids.Its not a grid driven amp.
