I'm a new member and heres my first question? a friend brought over a amp he said he's had it 15 years and he doesn't think it works anymore none of the lights come on, its a silver streak 150 mobile amp,what can you tell me about this amp and is it worth sending it to have it repaired? |

no, in my opinion, it will cost you more in repairs and shipping than it would to buy a new amp, the kl-300p or the palomar 300elite come to mind, you can get either one for under a hundred dollars. im not at liberty to divulge the source of these devices but, you're getting warmer!

probably not, if you can't fix it yourself. can't remember, but it probably has 2-mrf455 (60 watt) transistors, and in the real world keys about 60 watts and swings 125 or so. there's an awful lot of commercial amps out there for a hundred bucks or so that'll do the same wattage, and a couple bucks more will get almost double.
anyway, you sure it doesn't work? what does it have, 1 or 2 leds, slim as it may be, they could've burned out. open it up & look for signs of fire damage, if not, hook it up w/a dummy load & give a quick key to see what swr/wattmeter tells you. a quick key ain't gonna hurt anything that's already toast. |

There is always the possibility that the inline fuse is bad. |

thanks for the information, I got your e-mail pat and I will open the amp up and take a look and try a dummy load on it. I agree that its not worth spending money on it especially when you can get a new one for so little,I've been out of radios for 25 years and I'm in the process of putting together a new base setup, these forums are great! I've been doing alot of reading and it really helps to figure out what to buy and how to do it right the first! thanks again |
