It does not recieve any signal from any distance whatsoever. maybe a mile range... and the transmitting signal has power but it seems the rf gain or the mic gain is EXTREMEly low!! what should i do??? or do i need to just throw it away?? PLEASE HELP! its an old radio my dad gave me along time ago.

Don't throw it away,
I would check the alignment in the RX section first. As far as the mic gain being low, it may need to be realigned in the TX section as well. Also, it's just me, but I like to run an external power supply when first testing/diagnosing old radios like that. I do all of my aligning/tuning with the power supply, then I go ahead and use the radio's power supply. If you have low output readings on the wattmeter, check for good voltage regulation. There is a pair of transistors in this particular radio, that if one goes bad, poor performance will result. As any good tech knows, when you replace transistors in this configuration, always replace both. The bad transistor could've weakened the good one.
I would recheck everything on an external supply. Then go from there.

How much output are you getting?

This may seem like a silly question, and maybe it is, but before you dive into the radio, is the antenna system any good?
