i am beginning to realize that there is no absolute for this, but i was wondering if anyone out there with a power supply that has a current meter on it, and a big box; would tell me what your amp draw on the power supply is for a given wattage out. for example: if you are putting out 100 watts, how many amps are you pulling?
300 watts?
600?
thanks in advance for any help on this.

ar3500 swinging 160 SSB pulls about 17 -18 amps, icom ic735 swinging about 100 SSB pulls about 17, dx250 amp swinging 160 pulls 22, dx 350 swinging 250 pulls 28, those are all SSB.
3500 & ic735, 40w dead key pulls 8, dx250 pulls 15 @ 40 w dead key, dx350 pulls 11 @ 80 w dead key.
you are correct, there is no absolute, HOWEVER, the amp biasing, whether in the radio or linear, affects the amperage drawn from the power source.
my heads a bit fogged at the moment, but i believe biasing for SSB draws more current then for AM.

thanks pat!
ive got a kl300p and i didnt think that a 20 amp peak power supply would be enough. from reading your results, i think i'll go with a 25 amp continuous or higher depending on the deal i find.

just reread MY post KV & ran down to radio room to recheck my dx250 & 350 findings.
strange, but yes, the 350 draws less at dead key that's HIGHER then the 250, but swing the 350 pulled more. don't know why...
these are on a 35amp continuous, 40 intermittant, CSI/speco with built in meter. my multimeter inline shows within 2 amps either way.

General rule of thumb. 10 amps per 100 watts

i wonder the same thing, but they should both be AB1, i'll have to open 'em up someday & see if the 250 wasn't rebiased to class C maybe. i know that was done to my dx1600...

my AM habits die hard!
heck, even use my 5 pill class C davemade on SSB &, when everything is turned down a bit, have been told by locals as well as dx all over USA, europe, south america & west indies that audio quality is EXCELLENT.
quality in quality out, the ole XL sounds good, so the amp should too!
