This amp looks like a texas star or a super star but doesn't say. It has 4 buttons pwr., preamp, am, and ssb, and a milliamp meter. On the face it does say Bi-lateral, 4 power, and dx350. I am running my Xl w/ 2w dk (npc-rc mod). With the am button pushed in the amp dk is about 60-70w swing to about 150w. W/ the am button out is dk at 100w and swings to about 200w(have been told that it sounds over-modulated in this pos.). What kind of numbers (dk & swing) should I expect to see w/ this amp. Should I "volt the final" for better swing( and if so what size wire 14ga or 10ga)?
Thanks for the help & info,

If it in any way helps the pwr. button is red, pre-amp is white, am is orange, and ssb is yellow. There is no variable pwr. control.

Last nite after reading some of the other posts I set the dk as low as I could and still key the amp reliably. I also noticed that one of the coils from the pwr plug (on the radio) to the board, was getting hot enough to start melting the insulation on any wire that was touching it; why is it doing this?
Thanks

sure sounds like a texas star, however i don't recollect ever seeing a dx350 with 'bilateral' on it, maybe REAL old or REAL new?. open it up, does it have 2-2sc2879's in it? if so, high swing should be a bit more, closer to 250, especially with the mods done to your XL. it's always possible 2 watt dead key is TOO LITTLE, causing it to sound like sideband-but in that case you wouldn't see 100 watt dead key, it'd be WAY low, with LOTS of swing. try backing down power mic and/or mic gain.
post a picture of the insides as well as the outside if possible, i'm sure it'll be identified by somebody.

It does look like a texas star, but w/o the outline of texas and the star logo. I have been told that it is a real good and fairly old amp, although my buddy couldn't remember the name he did say it was not a texas star. Yes it does have the 2 2sc2879's in it and a smaller one also, I just can't see the number on the smaller one. I don't know if I can get pics on here but I'll try, If I can I'll post my mobile setup as best sa I can in the pic section. thanks for the info Pat.

Ok, I'm back to playing around w/ my amp again. I found a pic that LOOKS alot like the amp I am running. The t.s. dx600 looks alot like the little dx350 I have, just wish that they had posted the guts on that 600.

The colors are different that and the dx600 on the face are the only differences that I can see.

N-E-Way, The real reason that I'm back under this topic is that this amp on hi dk's @ about 150w and swings backward to about 100w; This CAN'T be good. Am I right on this count?
Better ques. how can I fix this. Is this caused by too little modulation or too much? My Xl is set to dk about 1.5w and swing is negligable at about 3w. Yes it has been npc-rc modded.
Last thing, My last audio check w/ the amp on hi; I have a wonderful signal, but very low modulation, w/ the set on all lower pwr settings, it sounds great.
Thanks sg569

backward swing is a sign of TOO MUCH dead key input. TOO MUCH SWING/MODULATION input will usually result in scratchy, crunchy output audio, & increased current draw, which could be excessive for the power source. the results of your original post here were better.

start from the beginning, though figures for radio still do not appear right,(1.5 watts should swing 7 or more, at least). HOW does RADIO alone sound? & at various output levels? if the npc-rc were working backwards-compressing the positive audio peaks-you could see downwards modulation. however i don't honestly know if it can be done that way, & if it could, what would it do to carrier, reduce it or not? do you have another amp to try, to be sure this 1 is working properly? or another stock radio to try on that amp?

you got me stumped, now, walter. this is 1 of those situations where i rip everything apart, go away for a while & come back later with a clear head. and try a different amp & radio, to see if i can isolate which piece is the problem piece. and a sledgehammer just in case.

I DID IT, I STUMPED PAT00.
Pat,
No sledge, I love my Xl. I want to keep it for the rest of my life(mods and all). No spare radio that works, and no spare amp.

Bigbob, NO 12 TON Splitter.( See above.)

A buddy of mine keeps telling me that I need to move the ant. from the rear bumper to the body with a ball mount, not real sure that I want to do that; yet. Without the amp inline (just my swr meter) the match is about 1.5:1-2.0:1 or thereabouts, accetable but not where I want it. With the amp inline the match is about flat, (even with the amp off) It doesn't go up very much even w/ the amp on hi.
Radio alone/ barefoot sounds loud, I don't think that the mod chip is going out, but I'm not real sure right now.
Maybe I'll pull the Xl and check and re-check the mods (ya know- just to make sure that I don't have a bad component or two; maybe I wired the cap backwards for the npc-rc mod, I don't know. I'll play w/ it for awhile.

Just kidding Pat, didn't think that I'd ever see that from you and others.

Thanks Walter/ sg569

Ok, I finally got fwd. swing on hi; keys 100w swings to about 175w.
Turned dwn. dk to 1w, now swings to 5w max. I'll keep playing w/ the dk.

Pat, any ideas on why my Xl doesn't swing to 7+ watts?
Thanks all,
sg569

actually bigbob, i tossed a COLD SOLDER JOINT SPECIAL galaxy out the window at a high rate of speed-back when i was young & foolish & actually OWNED a galaxy. that's when i smartened up & bought my AR3500!
hmmmmmm, STILL not right, but you're getting there, walter! went back & read the 1st post from may-maybe everything WAS good then & that's all that particular amp was gonna do. you said XL had npc-rc mod then-how was it working at that time? what kind of swing did it have with the 2 watt dead key then? what changes did you make since then to get 1st the backwards swing & 2nd forward but 25 watts less swing? or did those changes just 'happen'? you say radio alone/barefoot sounds loud-that's good, too. did you ever tell me WHAT meter you're using to measure wattage? & are you sure it's accurate? or at least close? is it reading PEP or rms 5 watts swing? either way it should still show more, but just to know what you're reading...are you doing all of this with the 2:1 swr or a dummy load?
just trying to ask ALL possible questions & something may 'click'. i'm wondering just how 'serious' this problem may be. or is it an 'illusion' created by a bunch of little things.
i've been stumped too many times to count. i now keep the sledgehammer locked up in my other truck

Pat,
I think that those changes just happened. The meter is a rat shak swr/ pwr meter( junk I know) It has been fairly accurate so far. The mic gain( on the radio) is all the way up, the pwr. mic is set at 2.

I take it that the match without the amp inline is the true match? Unfortunatly I don't have a dummy load big enough for my amp.
Could I have fried a transistor?
