CEF,

I think I have narrowed my HT Options to the above. As a new licensee, I don’t want to make a fatal error in my radio selection. I am soliciting your experience and guidance with the IC-T90A, VX-5or7R, and the IC-W32A. I know that the W32A is the only “Real” dual band HT. However, the other two have extensive RX capabilities and include 6 meter FM. All are similar in price. Is there something else that I should consider?

If there is anything that I should know before I decide, please share.

Kenwood THF6A is another good choice. I have that one and the T90A and like both equally well.
The Kenwood has 1.25 instead of 6m like the T90A.
I think the 6m on the HT is really strange, not any repeaters in my area for 6m and hardly any good condtions right now for 6 that an HT would do well.
I didn't buy it for the 6m, it's a really nice 2/70 and the wideband is great, but then so is the THF6A and VX7's.

As far as the 6M, it's my understanding that 6M on an HT doesn't work too well.

One feature you might want to look at is cross-band repeat. Of the ones you listed, only the IC-W32A has it. Another feature is dual RX. All except the IC-T90A (I think) have it.

The number of memory locations you have may be a factor. The 32A has 200, where-as the 90-A has 500 and the 7R has 900.

The VX-7R has 220mHz where-as the others don't. Like JellyBean said, you may want to include in research the TH-F6A:
2, 220, 70
.01 to 1300 RX
AM, FM, SSB
Dual RX
435 memories
no x-band repeat

EHam revies may help or hinder your decision too.

just some more thoughts to ponder.

CEF Members,

Thank you immensely for your input and points if interest for my first radio. I also spoke to several local friends and have decided on the Kenwood TH-F6A. It should do everything that I will need for a while. Good call Jelleybean and Viking.

Thanx again
