Af579,

Sorry I never heard of a super swing modification for the 2950 using the 1N4001.

If it is is an older 2950 you can Remove Q32 for more modulation but it will also disable VR12 which is the SSB ALC and will also disable the variable power on SSB.

However I do NOT recommend anyone doing this modification.

You can clip or remove R291 and it won!t disable ALC. It does the same as removing Q32, but you still control of ALC.

Semper Fi!!!

I have posted this mod several times on the Copper forums...

It can be done but you need a steady hand as you will be working on surface-mount-parts.

You also WILL need a copy of the parts layout diagram, downloadable from the RCI America site.

The diagram is needed to I.D. and locate the existing parts (they are not marked on the board in the radio)...

Once you get the diagram, tune the radio up to 100% modulation (with the limmiter intact!), 1W low power setting & wherever you want the high power setting to be. On the diagram, find chip-resistor R292 (this would be the same as R285 in the old 2950)...

After soldering one end of your 100ohm resistor to the banded-end of the 1N4001 diode, solder the resistor end of this combination, to the left end of R292 (the junction of R292 and C258).

The other "diode-end" is to be soldered to the other side of R292 or the asociated nearby ground-trace.

NOW, with the variable power set for a 1W dead key, the modulation should swing to almost full power and the modulation will not splatter or distort...ENJOY!

Thanks Inspector! I was suprised how little AVG power these radios had. I was only doing about 3 avg and 20 pep. Now I have avg of 13 watts and pep of 21 on one of my 2950dx and the other avg is 13 also but pep won't do much past 19 watts. humm ahh well they sound good anyhow :-)

PS I know you posted this a long while back I had a printed copy but could not find it so I searched the forums and came up with loads of pages to sift through. Thanks for re-posting this!

Boxcar,

I cannot say if it is for the Old or New 2950 as I did not mention R291 in my posts above.

Harve/Unit199 may be able to answer this question for you as I do not know which model old/new he is talking about.

I have never done this mod on a 2950 before for anyone so I cannot say.

Sorry about the mix up. I noticed you both have the same animated icons under your user id names. My bad! :-)

Boxcar,

No Problem.

Harve and I both proudly served in the Marine Corps and both served in Viet Nam.

Guess it is just a Marine Corps thing and we are proud of our service in the Marine Corps and for our Country so we choose to have the Marine Corps Globe & Anchor proudly displayed in our profiles.

Guess it is like the old saying goes
"Once a Marine always a Marine".

And when Harve or I add "Semper Fi!" to our post's it is "The Motto of the United States Marine Corps."

Which is Latin for always faithful.

Faithful to God, Country, Family and the Corps."

Very well said Lon. I got a little choked up.

Boxcar, that is for the old style 2950. Clip one
end of R291 and you still have control of sideband.

Semper Fi!!!
