Is there a code course like Code Quick or the Koch (G4FON) course that will run on a Mac computer running 10.3.9 system software? If you know of free software that will let me run these Windows programs that will work also.

Code Quick doesn't have any Mac sofware - OSX or Classic. You can use their audio course though.
Do a search on some of the Mac shareware sites for morse code tutor software. There are tons for the PC, and I'm sure there are a few available for Mac too - although they might be for the Classic OS.
Do new Macs still have the ability to boot into a Classic OS or has Apple stopped offering that?
I thought everyone who owned a Mac also owned Virtual PC? I can't tell you how many Mac people I spoke to that tried to connect to the internet through Virtual PC. BTW - It doesn't work. |

I can boot on classic 9.2 on both my iMacs and my iBook. The newest computer in the house is over 2 years old so I don't know about the stuff leaving the factory now. Most of the time I can find what I am looking for in a format that will run on a Mac but am running into a little trouble with Ham radio subjects. I might have to find an old computer running Windows to get what I am after. I have never tried Virtual PC because I have not heard much good about it. I have never used any type of Windows software as I have only used Mac computers. I'll start hunting around the shareware sites and see what I find.

I did Mac support at Apple's preferred ISP. Apple actually owned 10% of the company so we had to be very good with Macs and got quite a lot of calls about them. I can throw away preferences in my sleep - and once when I was totally buzzed on antihistamines I did and it wasn't pretty. Thankfully you can just go into the trash and "put away" what you didn't want to trash.
I'm sure there's lots of radio stuff out there for Macs. I remember seeing quite a bit when I was searching for radio stuff for palm pilots.

Sure - No problem. One question though - why a Mac? I'm always interested why folks buy Macs instead of Wintel boxes. |

Got started on Macs because that is what our friend who got us started in computers had. I should say he got my son started on Macs when he was around 4 years old (17 years ago). We have had only Macs ever since. A friend of my son works on Windows running computers and I told my son to see if they have any good used computers for sale cheap. Just something so I can open files that I can't open with Mac software. I am not one of Those people who argue that one is better than the other. I don't have any experience with anything other than Mac so have no opinion. Now my son and our friend are hard core Mac users.
A bit of news I heard is that Mac is going to Intel processors. |

Cool deal. Macs are a different animal. I'm cheap, so I prefer Wintel boxes, but I do own an early IMac. For the same amount of money, I think you can build a much more powerful Wintel box, but it really comes down to the software you need to run. There are lots of image and video manipulation programs that are better on the Mac than Wintel, but recently they're getting much closer.
I worked with a guy who knew more about Macs than anyone else at our ISP. He really changed my mind about technical people liking Macs. Until I met him I thought that people chose Macs because they didn't want to learn the basics of how to use a computer. I still think that's the target market, but because the hardware is so well done, it also attracts folks who are really into hardware too. OSX seems to have grown that audience. |
