I believe this box is a Palomar. I was told it is suppose to be 500 watts. It has a 35 amp power supply built into it. I am sure you all know exactly what I'm talking about.
Questions...How many transistors are inside? What is the average power output of this amp and the PEP output?
I assume they are 1446's and if so, can they be upgraded to a bigger or better transistor. If so, what must be done?
I also assume that this box will work on 10 meters.. |

4 MRF455s usually and why would you want to upgrade unless you have a 70 amp transformer and bigger pass transistors,4 sd1446s will draw 40 amps continuous,4 2879s will draw 120 amps,see where I'm going with this 500 pep is plenty and it's 100 more than I got,or you could trade up to a klv 1000.Bigbob |

the older ones DID use 455's, 2 in the 300w/25 amp & 4 in the 500w/35 amp. the 500 watter i saw doing closer to 250!!!watts, & i think 35 amp was generous max rating. saw it choke powering a 2970.
the new ones use 1446's, which i've seen do LESS then 300 watts also. but have HEARD of them doing 350+. PEP. wouldn't bet on it-however you wanna rate 1446's-70 watts, 90 watts whatever, 350 would be TOPS. |

I cracked it open, 4 1446's. The transformer in the bottom is huge. I see about 400 watts PEP on my meter into a dummy load. About 125 watts or so average, also into the dummy load.
I figured the readings would be higher. The power supply puts out about 14.8 volts. I wonder if I can turn that up to around 16 volts? The power supply is what I am most interested in anyway. |
